Not only is he 19, he’s a mature 19. He looks a lot older than 19 - more like 25ish. He probably started shaving in grade school. He might improve but only marginally. He’s probably near his peak now. He’ll never make a senior National team and will just be a peripheral player. His genetics allowed him to be as good as he is now but his genetics will also be a limiting factor in the future.
Yep. I take the 19 point. But people get too caught up in age, rather than considering when people hit puberty. Some guys really get it at 15, others (like me) have wto wait a few more years.

A lot of the guys that mature early are really good in high school. In college they sometimes stagnate a bit and are surpassed by the late bloomers. That happens fairly often and I believe that was the point being made.
It will be interesting to see how Flatt does going forward but many that are as mature as he is now don't have nearly as much room for improvment in the future as someone that is barely out of puberty. He already looks more physically mature than some of the world class 800 guys that will be competing in the WC in a few weeks.
It is more important how Flatt does over the next few years. What he did in high school, while significant, will be insignificant in the whole scheme of things.

The other point, that goes along with what I wrote above, is that the title of this thread, "Cade Flatt is the greatest HS 800m runner ever," may well be true. While that is sort of neat and cool, to be possibly considered the greatest high school 800 meter runner ever, is it really going to be that important in the future? Will Cade Flatt ever be "the greatest 800 meter runner ever?" That is highly unlikely. The chance of him even being the greatest 800 meter runner ever from the United States is highly unlikely. If he has one of the top 100 times ever run by an American at any point in his career I will be shocked.
He is only .6 seconds away from top 100. To say that you will be shocked if he inproves by such a tiny amount is disingenuous. That or you get shocked by seeing the sun rise in the morning. I put the over/under at 1:45.0 life time which is 55th.
Flatt had a great season but I’m not sure he was the greatest high school 800m runner of this year let alone all time. Sumner nearly matched his PR. Flatt ran 1:46 more times but would he have beaten Sumner if both were at their best? I wish they would have raced each other so we could have a definitive answer on who was better.
This right here. Who cares? When you are 19 in Kenya, Uganda or UK noone cares if you are the best high schooler. At 19 people care how they are doing against the best in the country and against the best internationally.
Flatt ran 1:46.51 at age 18.
Flatt graduated high school at age 18.
Flatt just competed against the best in the country and finished 9th.
Flatt will be 19 his freshman season in college and running 1:45s.
"He holds the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th fastest times, and is only .03 off the record"
You don't know anything track if you think he is .03 off of world HS record or holds 2-3-4 all time in tge world. Sort of like posting in a thread about Tuohy or Cook being best high school runner and you say Sahlman is way faster because nobody said they were limiting the "best" to females.

OP wrote that, not me. Are you arguing with yourself?
The OP wrote it. You seem to lack reading comprehension. He stated those facts pertaining to US HS records but you claimed that he didn't limit his field to US only.

The point to take is that it took Flatt ONE year longer to finish K-12.

So the 9th best runner in the US! Thats good! I dont care about the freshman season stuff obviously. He migh be top 3 in the US in some years if everything goes his way?
For guys, Cade Flatt has to be the best 800m ever. He holds the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th fastest times, and is only .03 off the record. We all know he could've gotten it since he let up at the line at US champs, so idrc that he didn't get it, and if he hadn't been holding back for the semi-finals, he would have. Regardless of whether you like him or not, I think he's shown he's the best.
2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th???? Don't you need to be No#1 to be the BEST EVER?
