No one would care. Pre was a legend because of the time period. He had to earn his popularity because there weren't so many avenues for people to get attention. Nowadays, just throw out on social media how you are being discriminated against and you get more attention then running fast.
And if he hadn't died so young and tragically (is there any untragic death), he would not even be spoken of anymore. His legend grew with the question of what could have been.
Pre would get the same amount of attention then as Sha'Cari does today. Speaking out publicly was frowned upon at that time. Pre would have given letsrun a lot to write about.
I will start by saying that I have not read any responses.
I lived through the Pre phenomenon- I was 15 when he died. We were about to start track practice when the news came on the portable radio my one friend always brought to practice.
If Pre were alive he would be a Progressive Liberal fighting for athletes' rights, people's rights, prisoners' rights.
He'd pro choice, he'd be anti-Trump and vocally calling ANYONE supporting the current Republican Party cowards.
If he ended up winning a gold medal and was invited to Trump's White House he'd go just so he could give Trump an earful about what a horrible, deplorable person he is.
So, you decide. Would Letsrun hate him or not.
Agree with this post.
You know, I'll admit it when I first heard of Pre, I didn't get what all the hubbub was about. But the more I grow, the more I realize how much we missed Pre's voice.
He would have hated Nike.
He would have HATED Salazar coddling of Galen Rupp, shuddered over comparisons between him and Rupp over the years and lamented about how if runners are in bubble wrap all the time how can they ever be tough?
He would have stood up for athlete rights.
I miss him.
Knight would have built Nike around Pre and Pre wouldn’t thought any of that stuff about other runners. Where are your comments coming from? He didn’t like the AAU or Harold Norpoth, but that was about it. I don’t see any reason to think would have become a “Get off my lawn” type of guy. He was an extremely charismatic guy that got along well with other people.
