A great race. I loved watching that race, after enduring that jogathon in the women's 5k, with the announcers blabbing on about how it was too hot to run fast. Then the men went out there and showed those excuses to be sheer nonsense. Grant was outright great, but the other contenders ran very well, too. I like 'em all.
To me the most badass part of Fisher's race is running 58.10 for the second to last lap and then not completely dying.
Yeah really badass having your constantly injured 35 year old teammate pace you through 3400.
Fisher was afraid of a kickers race so he brought in his own personal rabbit. Cowardly.
I don't see how the pacing part is relevant here. Fisher ran the second to the last lap at roughly his 1500m pace in 86 degrees in a fast race and didn't blow up.
Here's another race where running the second to the last lap hard didn't work out so well. This is the greatest race of all time in my opinion. Fast-forward to 1:15 for the last 3 laps:
Kim Conley eked out a spot on the 2012 Olympic team, claiming the critical third and final spot by just .04 seconds in the women's 5000 meter trials #NBCSpor...
Hocker has not run a 5000 within 15 seconds of Fisher. You cannot seriously think he would have beaten Fisher. That’s just dumb. Klecker is a little bit more of a challenge, but no, again, peal Fisher you saw today and peak Klecker are not in the same league. The issue is whether or not peak Fisher has a chance against Aregawi et al. Stop with the nonsense about domestic competition. Fisher at his best is way better than the rest of the Americans at 5000 and 10000.
Chelimo at his best is just as good as Fisher at 5,000m. 3x global outdoor medals, but clearly not fit enough this year.
im not sure if this is true anymore. chelimo is getting older and fisher has taken a major step

Chelimo ran a 12:59 in the heat 10 months to get a bronze medal. At his best he is every bit as good as Fisher, but with his age how often will that be?

Why was Chelimo so out of shape yesterday? Has he been hurt, or not sufficiently motivated after Tokyo, or has age caught up with him? This year it seems the difference between him and fissure is a chasm. I have a feeling it’s going to stay that way, but we don’t know for sure.

for American guys this is what a 3:35 guy an look like
He is 7th on the all-time 10K list, which makes him the only American man to crack the top 10 list at a distance above 800 meters. (Brazier is 9th in the 800 meters.) For what is is worth, he's also far ahead of any runner born outside of Africa at that distance.
So yes, he is in his own category as far as current American distance runners go. Plus at his age, he figures to get better rather than worse.
It's been awesome following Fisher's development. Perhaps only a few will admit it now but there was a time when some thought that Drew Hunter would be the better pro.

Grant takes his job seriously.
Puts his head down and trains to race.
No pomp, no glam, no smack-talk.
His racing performance consistency is outstanding.
Limited social media presence with respect to self promotion. When he does engage the media he is genuine, professional and insightful. He seems to like interacting with fans on and off of the track.
And he is America’s best shot competing at the international level when the pace is fast in the 5 and 10k. Maybe we will see him in a 3k this summer in Europe and he can add that to a growing list of American records.

Yeah he’ll never have a better spot than this too. On a home meet with no Kiplimo, perhaps no Kandie in the 10, a banged-up Ahmed and Rodgers Kwemoi it appears. Yes the field is strong in both the 5/10 but it could be worse if Barega could double.
Fisher closed his AR 10000 in 27.4 and beat Ahmed in an all out duel to the line. Seriously, enough with the nonsense he’s not fast enough. If he’s fit enough, and he seems to be, he’s fast enough to compete with the best and win. What is the evidence that Woody is “faster” than Fisher?
Exactly. He might not have that 25s last 200 speed in an ultra slow race, but he has enough "kick" to drop a quick last 200 in a decently fast race.
Didn’t Grant close the Pac 12 1500 way back in 50.x? I think we’re underestimating his last 400 just because he overestimated his last 70 meters in the 10k this year, and was a relatively poor tactician in comparison to Klecker.

Kiplimo is running the 3k in Stockholm this week. I think that means he'll run the 5 and 10 in Eugene, but who knows what shape he's in. Not raced since taking the HM WR at RAK. I would set the over/under on Fisher at 7th in the 5k and 5th in 10k (that could move once the Kenyan team is announced)

You're probably right. I think his speed is "good enough" at the elite level but I don't think it's quite great enough to be a differentiator amongst top level guys, like how Hocker (last year) even against guys like Centro was able to just light them up over the last 200.
I mean Fisher only lost to Klecker by a couple tenths, so it's not like he was outclassed. I just don't think he can rely purely on his speed to win races, because I think his speed is just average compared to other top level pros. He doesn't quite have that trump card in the last 200 that guys like Hocker (or even Woody) have. In a pure drag race there's no guarantee that Fisher would win.
Trying his best Bekele '08 impersonation, oppressive conditions and everything
Amazing race
FINALLY!! A US Championship Mid-Distance race where they didn't let it the pace dawdle along. What was it Bill Bowerman said? There's no such thing as bad weather or only weak people. I loved Kara's shock when she said the split and realized that they were going FAST.
If Grant gets outkicked, he's a loser time trialer and blew his wad too early in the season. If he shows up and DOMINATES the field, he's a cheater. The dude can't win.
That's okay, you'll all be upset about it and he'll be smiling his way across the finish line!
