If you can run those 50 miles in 6 hours, it is safe to say you can run 3.1 miles in 22.5 minutes.
Multiply your running start 100m time by 71 then divide by 60.
Use racing flats for the 100m test.
If your 100m time is < 10.7 or your BMI is >22, you are not a 5000m runner.

Go by feel. See what works for you. Some people see big improvements at 50 mpw, but others burn out and run into overtraining problems.
In high school, my XC coach would keep it at 20-30 mpw except for a select few varsity runners who voluntarily wanted to do more and could easily handle the increased mileage. For most other high school runners, they would burn out with this kind of mileage.
