OK, I'll be honest about the fact that I'm not a NP fan and can't name their squad. Although I was very into running in high school, I can't get myself to follow high school track. OK, so why did I click on this thread?
Because the 'recruiting' term was there in the title and it sounded like it would get controversial and adversarial. I remember all the freaking out about Drew Hunter's school and people moving there to join the program, or maybe moving there coincidentally, or conceivably running in spite of not living there, etc. I have no opinion; I just remember that there was a ton of smack-talk on the MB. I correctly guess that this would be similar.
So here's what I can ascertain from the many posts:
Ball sports actively recruit and this is well-known.
Supposedly, CIF, or whatever the State federation is called, has rules against this.
It has been alleged that the team in question has broken many of them, or just one many times, or a few of them a few times or something...
There is apparently no punishment for breaking these rules. Neither our heroes at NP nor the State football champions have been fined, jailed, or anything else.
Even if that changes and CIF disallows them from competing in their meets, that effects NP very little. I remember a thread title (didn't click on it; don't know what it said) about how few, if any of their runners attended the CIF meet. (I wrote 'meets' plural earlier because I'm guessing qualifying events for the State meet exist, ie. CIF organizes more than one event.) At any rate, the rules in question, whether or not they exist and are enforced, do not affect elegibility for Runninglane, whatever Foot Locker is called now, NXN, Nike anything else, Brooks Nationals, NB Nationals, Hoka Nationals if that comes into existence, or collegiate/pro/invitational events of any sort.
My conclusion is that high school recruiting is alive and well. The list of NP runners who are not from their district seems to include all of the talked-about ones. The thread was started to discuss who was mysteriously/coincidentally showing up there next. Is this good or bad? The Board seems split on that.....

The reality is that top runners/athletes/scholars are selecting Schools that offer the best chance for success development. If I had a kid who excelled at playing the violin I would look for a school that had a great music/symphony program. I might contact the music director and talk to some parents to get a feel for the program. That begs another questiom -Do musicians have to sit out a yr if they transfer?
You mean all those Newbury Park kids aren't actually from within the high school boundaries? I thought it was just something about living there that made them so good. You're not implying that Newbury Park would (gasp) actually recruit kids to come to their school?
Our district (in CIF-SS) permits transfers between schools if they have room, so kids just have to live within the district.
