Let’s see if Brosnan can get the NP girls to a title and see if the boys program can continue to flourish without a Young or a Sahlman on the roster. He was given a gift and made the most of it. Can he coach regular kids to the same level as his current squad? That remains to be seen.
Newbury Park has 2 incoming freshmen with 3200 PRs of 10:37 and 10:11. Also a couple of more incoming freshmen who ran a sub-5. And also another incoming 10:37 freshman who is pretty likely going there. And another incoming 8th grader who ran a 10:34 in the 3200.
This program will still be in good hands and is looking to be in the position to maybe get another national in fall 2025.
None of the imcoming freshmen I’m speaking of are related to Lex Young or Colin Sahlman btw.
Hint hint: the incoming 8th grader with a 10:34 PR is related to Aaron Cantu
Another incoming freshman with a 10:11 PR is related to Jonah Sloan, an incoming junior who was near the top of JV last year. Both Sloans should be scoring in the first year without a Young or a Sahlman
The Cal Poly AD flew to Eugene to meet with Texas' Pete Watson the week of NCAA's, but talks fizzled when Cal Poly wanted to keep their program well rounded on one of the worst budgets in the Big West. All of the top Cal Poly prospects came from P5 schools. The entire athletic department is faltering, so the AD was only going to hire someone from a big school to save his own job. It's comical to think he did not have any concept of the kind of impact Brosnan would have made. Vanhoy is a fine coach, but it takes a gritty--build it from the ground up--kind of coach with a solid foundation of CA HS running to get a program like Cal Poly to a new level. Brosnan would have been a logical fit, but Cal Poly shot too 'high' and now whichever program is smart enough to hire Sean will reap the benefits.
Most of these posts promoting Brosnan are from Brosnan so he can get PR. He's an avg coach who fell ass backwards into one of the largest schools in the state coupled with 2 genetically gifted families along with unlawful recruitment. Let's see him coach at a normal school.
Don’t understand why people think this is so unrealistic. Carlson was coaching high school at Saint Charles North before coming to ND. My understanding is he only had a very brief stint assistant coaching at a d3 level before that. Doesn’t seem that unlikely that a much more qualified coach like Brosnan could land the same gig
This is the correct analysis.
As someone said, there are many out there with years of experience ... and confirmed mediocrity. You know what you're getting and it's no different from the norm. If I were an AD with a brain I would be interested in a coach with less experience but who has knocked it out of the park and built a strong culture. So he has had talented athletes? Big deal. Principles of training and culture-building are the same. If he can get Cali kids to work he can get rust belt Midwestern kids to work in his sleep.

Hi Coach Brosnan. Hope your kids have a good summer. Good luck reloading for the fall.

well, i don't think it's out of bounds to think Brosnan could coach D1, even at a place like Notre Dame. He gets kids to work and run to their ability. But this post from NOTIMPRESSED is a bit much!

If you were an AD, you probably wouldn't care all that much about XC or Track and the most important trait you're looking for is someone who isn't going to make your job harder. The last thing an AD wants to deal with is rules violations or complaints about a program. The AD at NP can probably attest to the hassle it is to be constantly dealing with CIF about complaints filed against NP with Brosnan at the helm.
You know what my experience was before coaching D1? Simply All-American status. No high school coaching. Brosnan would be phenomenal in a college setting like Mike Smith is.. it's more about personality than X's and O's.

To claim Sean Carlson was hired to coach the men at Notre Dame is disingenuous. Of his 11+ years there, he was only actually in charge of men’s distance for about half of that. He was hired to be Joe Piane’s stopwatch holder. Then was retained to be Matt Sparks van driver & recruiting coordinator. This is not to knock Carlson at all - clearly he did an excellent job when he was given the reigns to the program. But this is actually a great example of what Sean Brosnan is going to have to do as well if he wants to get into college coaching. He’s going to have to check his ego at the door & be ready to be the coffee errand boy unless he’s prepared to go to a very low funded/lower division school. Whether right or wrong, no AD or Director of T&F at a real DI school is going to hire a guy with zero NCAA experience to actually do the coaching. I’m not saying I agree with it/he couldn’t do a great job…but that’s how it works. Remember when Doug Soles kept telling everyone he was going to bail for college coaching year after year & told everyone BYU was actually interested in him…? It’s going to be the same for Brosnan.
You first D1 job was not making $100k at ND. Don't try to insinuate that it was. Making $25k at a middle major is one step up from being a HS coach. That is a normal path to coaching at a real D1 school.

The normal path with give you normal or typical results.
There is no world where he lands a prime D1 coaching job. Zero chance.
His resume? Of coaching the greatest HS boys xc team ever? I think he's certainly qualified and if he wants to do college, he needs a college jobs as so many college ADs . They think "Only D1" when they don't realize a track coach who understands running should excel at any level and with any sex - HS, college, pro, male or female.
Now Notre Dame doesn't pay well. But to me this makes A LOT of sense if Brosnan wants to get into college. Now, he may not want into college and may be thinking, "My god if adidas is dropping like well north of $500,000 on two runners who can't even make the US 1500 final (Kessler/Hunter), why dont they pay me $150k a year to coach the next group of HSers they have go pro?"
