You need sufficient lace length to support your testicles.
My guess is that they use the same lace length for a wide range of shoe sizes, so if you wear a size 9 and your shoes have the same laces as the size 13, yours are going to feel too long.
But my size 13 New Balance are also way to long.
I always thought its because i could knot it up and shove it down the side of my foot in the shoe (because i have relatively narrow heels, but i guess this is just me...)
Because if they were too short people couldn't do up their shoes, and people lace shoes in different ways, so I suppose they have to err on the side of caution. But yes I've had some altra trainers where the laces were ridiculously long and it made them a pain. If you cut them off they fray, as I discovered on another pair.
About... I can't remember... 10 years ago... I started routinely removing the laces when I got a new pair of shoes and replacing the laces with 1/8" marine shock cord and those round ball cord locks. The advantages are:
- Eliminates or greatly reduces the risk of toe of foot bruises due to shoe being laced too tight.
- Reduces the risk of Morton's Neuroma by allowing the shoe to expand slightly on impact due to the stretch of the elastic on the laces closest to the forefoot.
- Faster to put on and "tie" the shoe... maybe 5 seconds vs. 20 seconds.
- Eliminates the need to stop and retie your shoes when running. This is a huge benefit, especially in XC and other short races.
I tried commercial elastic laces, but they were too thin. They had to be pulled so tight that they lost the advantage of stretchiness. I sometimes have to use a nail (or a drill bit, screwdriver, etc) to widen the eyelet hole a little to get the thicker 1/8" shock cord through the eyelet, but that's really easy to do. After tightening the shock cord, I stick the excess cord through the lowest lacing on the shoe by the forefoot so it doesn't flop around.
Fat people have fat feet. Most people are fat. Same reason a size medium tshirt is bigger than a size Large from twenty years ago.
