....At age 35, Cincinnati's most well-known runner has been competing for 21 years, making the all-Ohio team for Milford High, earning All-America status in the 10,000 meters at Wake Forest and twice qualifying for the Olympic Trials in the marathon. Sence said Tuesday that after this year's Mini-Marathon and a try at October's Chicago Marathon, his serious racing days probably are over.
"It's hard to keep training at the level I need to race at, the level I'd like to be at," Sence said. "With kids, jobs, family and age - I've got to admit, my body doesn't respond like it used to."
Sence said he still might run locally, but his training will be scaled back. And he doesn't think he'll have a problem enjoying the races at a slower pace.
"Mentally, I've been going at it for so long. Ever since I was 14 years old, I've been training so hard," Sence said. "It's been both a mental and physical sacrifice ... getting up early in the morning, going out into the cold. I don't think it will be very hard to turn over, shut off the alarm and pull the covers back up. I don't think I'll have any trouble being a jogger..."
