Sure, he ran a bad race. He went out faster than he should have and paid for it. The consequences are his own, and he doesn't owe an apology to anyone else in the field.
If CF thought that having to pass a single runner would be an issue then he possibly should have picked a meet that didn't include other fast 800m runners, and just set up a race with himself and a rabbit.
Yeah, well he ran 1:53.48 today. That's 8 full seconds behind Flatt, and kind of makes make point he had no business going out that fast. I'm pretty sure his coach isn't going to say that going out in 51.25 was always the plan...
You're right, it's absolutely unheard of for a highschool 800m runner to go out too hard, especially with the adrenaline of being in a National meet, he must've been trying to ruin the record attempt. Also, Flatt was exactly 7 seconds faster, I know math can be hard sometimes.
Soloing a 1:46.48 is definitely with 1.45.5 easily if he is behind others and not doing all the work. I am going to go out on a limb and say he runs 1:45 low at USA nationals

"Soloing"!?!?! He only led for 300 meters. That's not a solo run. Granville's run was a solo run.

You don't drop a full second in an 800 by being in second place instead of first place. That's not how it works.

I never dreamed I'd see the day that a high schooler runs a 1:53 800 and get dissed

Welcome to Letsrun, where a random person will go online to call a high school kid they've never met an idiot because they were ahead of another high school kid they've never met.
Has at least one more shot, maybe several at US Sr. Nats.
I want to see the record fall but I don’t think USA’s is the best place. It’ll be a more tactical race (depending on the the heat) more than likely and I don’t think the traffic is conducive for record breaking.
If he can get through the first round, he's got a shot. First round, the races are generally won in 1:48-50, then the second round is where you start to see more guys run 1:45-47. Hopefully Flatt gets through the first round with enough spring in his legs for the next one.
