Sixty plus years ago if I young man broke 4 for one mile, he had a good shot to make Olympic finals in one or more event, 800m to 10000m. Over sixty years ago no Marathoners were sub-4 milers. Sub-1:45 800m in high school is going to be the standard. I don't see 3:59.xx 1600m or 3:59.xx mile correlating to Olympic success anymore. Sub-1:45 800m in high school will lead to success no doubt.
Great to see a South Dakotan in the spotlight. He was so dominant at the state meet a couple weeks ago. His pb was definitely misleading, he just needed to get into a fast race.
Very good. I believe Steve Holman was a 49.xx guy in high school.
Spencer Brown ran 49 in high school too. Isn’t that normal for a sub 4 miler?
Most guys in Olympic & W.C. 1500m semi-finals and finals are about 47.xx of 48.xx 400m guys. Judging by my college sub-1:50 800m teammates, I assume most sub-1:50 800m guys are also sub-50 400m guys. I would guess most U.S. sub-4 1600m high school guys are 50.xx or 51.xx 400m guys. I would think if high school T&F coaching staff saw that a kid had 49.xx 400m potential, said kid would not train with 1600m & 3200m kids.

He had the 3rd best 400 time in South Dakota (49.89). Who knows how fast his 400 time would be in warmer weather.
Pretty hard to convince yourself that the shoe's don't have a large effect at this point, though.
It's pretty easy if you use your critical thinking skills. Let's say, for example, someone runs 4:10 wearing "super" spikes. Then, a month later, wearing the same spikes, they run 4:07. Then, a couple months after that, they run 3:59. If the spikes are constant, but the times are getting faster, it's not the spikes.
