The sudden shock of hearing of a ANY female running 2:15:25 startled me and immediately I thought-NO WAY POSSIBLE. After some heated dialouge with some other poster(s)- namely Sig Edith- I calmly thought could this performance be possible without drugs. While I know this performance (2:15:25) will place posters in three different categories of skeptical, pro-Paula, anti-Paula. I attempt not to change anyone's opinion I am however simply explaining why I remain skeptic:
1.) The arguement of women's distance running is relatively new doesn't fit the bill. The previous record(s) of
2:21:06 INGRID KRISTIANSEN in 1985 was a 30:13.74 10000m runner who train vigorously and intelligently.
2:20:43 TEGLA LOROUPE in 1999 is a 30:32.03 10000m runner who performed MUCH better the longer the distance.
2:19:46 NAOKO TAKAHASHI in 2001 was never an accomplished 10000m runner; however, she posted a 2:21:47 from 1998 and ran several other marathons before improving on the record by 1 minute and 03 seconds!
2:18:47 CATHERINE NDEREBA in 2001 was a very accomplished road racer and marathoner before improving on the record by 59 seconds.
The women who previously held the record before Paula were all accomplished in one median or another and physically capabilities were near or equal to PAULA RADCLIFFE'S! The margin Paula dramatically improved on a mark that was already considered REVOLUTIONARY 2:18:47 to women's distance running down to 2:15:25 (time frame: 1 yr 6 months).
2.) The fact that Paula is now doing marathon training is irrelavant, don't all ELITE marathoners train hard for the marathon (some whose 5000m and 10000m pr's are nearly equeal to Paula's).
3.) The recovery methods of Paula and her trainers are important factor in her running fast. Tegla Lourope ran a sub 31 minute 10000m seven (7) days after running a 2:29 maathon at the 2000 Olympics. Point another great marathoner will exceptional recovery, near equal 10000m speed, and great trainers-what seperated Tegla from reaching Paula's level?
4.) The method of which Paula ran her record incorporating a 4:57 (ideal for elite men marathoners) 3rd mile and not feeling any fatigue immediately after that mile and able to negative spilt after an EYEPOPPING first half.
(No other athlete have displayed the ability to run 26.2 miles at such a high percentage of their 10000m person-Not even Haile and Paul Tergat-if they did the marathon record would be 2:02:high)
Paula 10000m 30:01.09 averages to APPROX. 4:52 per mile
Paulas Marathon 2:15:25 avgs to APPROX 5:10.1-5:12 p/m
I know that everyone has their opinion and regardless of what another category (skept, pro, anti) post it will not change others opinion. I however wanted to post WHY I REMAIN SKEPTICAL about the performance.
What category do you fall in and why?
