As good as this year's h.s milers are next year could be as good, if not better. Starrt with Burns at 3:58.83, then Rocky Hansen & Leo Young, both under 4:01, Lex Young under 4:02, and several others close by. These guys are coming out if the woodwork. And there a few more races left in the season.
Cones, legit timing are record-eligible. Drug test is the only thing missing at this point. Daschback still the only non-Nike HS4 in the modern era? Ryun, Liquori, et al weren't in them, but from Webb on, there's just the one exception, correct?
Gary mentioned it in the interview which was cool. Watching Burns get swarmed by his teammates was amazing. I guess he's only a junior? Someone will surely post his exact age not too long from now.
3:52, makes the US 1500 team with Cole MF SHOCKER and copper tear. You heard it here first
So of course the above is preposterous. What some do not realize is that Martin’s solo was actually likely as conducive to a fast time as tonight. The reason I say this is because he had little pressure, he ran no extra distance getting around guys, and credit to him, he ran very even splits. This was negated by the fact he had nobody to draft off of or even follow. To me it is somewhat of a wash. Now factor in all of the racing he has done recently and Martin is likely to run 3:57 to 3:59, which is still impressive as hell.
You are right about a lot of stuff but yet I Can’t decide the best reply to saying that Martins first sub 4 was conducive to a fast time:
a) yup, that’s why so many guys have gone sub 4 in a high school county champs meet with nobody within 20 seconds,
or,
b) kind of true, but only in the sense that it was conducive for a fast time only if your name is Gary F. Martin!
Yeah I didn't realize Burns was a junior until they said it in the interview. Next year is gonna be absolutely crazy with NP, Burns, and Hansen, plus the slew of 4:05-4:10 guys. The last guy to break 4 as a junior went and ran 3:55, what is Burns gonna pull off next year?
I'd tell you to look at the distribution in a few years. I'm sure the point will be more salient. Hopefully that word isn't too big for you.
Why do you think the shoes are the driving factor when the trend began before the shoes were released? What caused Verzbicas, Fisher, Maton, Hunter, Slagowski, Brown, and Daschbach to run under 4 in the mile?
Shoe tech. Downvote all you want. Y’all in denial. There will be 50 sub 4 high schoolers by 2030.
The trend began before the shoes were released. From 2011-2020 there were 7 HSers under 4 in the mile, double the number in the previous 5 decades. All without the shoes.
Every pro that made the HSer lead that thing from 1k to 1400 should turn in their pro card immediately.
Martin runs 3:57 having to do the work himself which is what I guess he did at home as well.
Except that NOBODY made “the HSer” lead. The HSer chose to lead.
Except that NOBODY in that field had any guts except Martin. He chose to lead because he's a stud and a competitor. Martin was the only pro in that race.

Your assertion is ridiculous. Intelligence matters. Have you ever run a race? Gary Martin is on their level. They were all running for themselves. Nothing to do with guts. Surely you can grasp this?

Yeah, when Martin looked back after the first lap, I think he was wondering 'where is everybody at?' He had sized up the situation, and realized he would be having to be the lead when the pacers dropped out. It was a great learning experience for him, but I think in a faster pro race, he could have still gone out at that pace, but been able to tuck behind others to drag him through lap 3 and on.
