I have had runners in masters that qualified with the at large marks in past seasons in the 1600 but that is when there were dominant runners in the races . One year masters had all 12 athletes that qualified because the winning time was 4:03. I also had a runner in this race who's time was barely on the qualifying standard. I told the runner I was coaching to try to stay in the top 3 at all times during the race in case it went out slow. It does not make sense for most of the top runners to try to lead the races to help other runners pr especially when the top pr is 4:09 in the field. The reason being is long as you are at the front of the race you are most likely to qualify since half the field makes it in. It would play out differently if only one runner made it and the rest had to run a qualifying time . This is what championship racing is like it's not about time it's about putting yourself in the best postion and winning.
1. League Prelims 2. League Finals 3. CIF Prelims 4. CIF Finals 5. Masters 6. State Prelims 7. State Final
And people wonder why the 2 top Newbury Park boys didn't want to run 7 state races PLUS a national race for a total of 8 races.
That's too many races. They should reduce the number of races needed in order to win a state title.
What's more, there are huge discrepancies in the sizes of the sections. Oakland is its own section for some reason (along with SF an LA). The population in the Oakland section is probably only about 400,000 while the Southern Section, which covers a lot of SoCal has a population of 20 million or so. It makes no sense. If they just broke up the SS they wouldn't need as many weeks of qualifying.

Here is a novelty idea: Qualify times
The qualifying rounds can still happen so the D bags at CIF can make their $$$ over doing what's best for the high school athletes. But give the option to qualify on time for the state championships. Utah and VA to name a few do it and so can California. Again I'm talking about doing wha't best for the actual kids. And the CIF Southern Section can carless about the kids.

CIF southern section and doing what’s best for the HS athletes is something that will never happen.
That organization is honestly pathetic. They need to completely clean house.
Excuses , excuses. Too many races. BS ! Quit whining and run the races. For such a big shot “team” Newberry Park boys will not have any state champions in track 2022. Cmon coach what’s your excuse for this time?

You are already well aware that out of the top 4 Newbury Park boys, 2 boys have decided to skip the state meet in order to run against pros, and a 3rd boy has been too sick to run.
Since you already knew that, what was the point of your post?
Not surprising really. These kids do so much racing, most are long past peak by the time they race here.
The CIF Southern Section has always destroyed these kids with the rounds. They need to get those old timers out and revamp completely.
I love this. Let's change the system.
Here are my proposals
1. Auto-Qualifying marks - Top 9 wind legal marks (verified pits for long jump) at verified invitationals with actual officials [No dual meets] will automatically qualify for state.
2. Masters Meet Qualification - Since it is likely that many of the top athletes will automatically qualify these athletes will be exempt from the masters meet. These athletes will be counted as qualifiers and will take away spots for automatic qualifying (top 6 in SS). Winners at the masters meet will automatically qualify, but that is all that is guaranteed. Athletes can also qualify with at large state standards as is the current process.
So let me play Devil's advocate for a second. I am in no way saying the system is perfect.
So let's say that they didn't have all these rounds. I feel like most teams would fill the openings with an invitational anyways.
The difficulty of the rounds don't affect 99% of the kids correct? Those that are would-be state champions in the 800/1600 don't need to go all out in most of those. They should be able to advance pretty easily in league, sections, etc.
Why do they all let the pace lag when they can all go to STATE? 2:12 at 800m.
It's the age old problem in mid-d racing of no one wanting to take control of the race. Just about everyone in the field thinks he is the best sprinter in the race. He isn't and there is a price to be paid if you allow the pace to be pedestrian. The creme of the crop usually gets through regardless of the pacing b/c they can sprint, but some guys can't close in 57 or better and would've qualified had they kept it honest. Their fault. They chose to jog for 1200.
