KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Director of Tennessee Track & Field and Cross Country Beth Alford-Sullivan announced Friday the hiring of recruiting coordinator and assistant
A coach should never say, "It is truly exciting to bring Austin back to Rocky Top and MY program.” It shows that she thinks the program is only about her. The program is as storied as any in collegiate track and field. It is the fellow coaches, current athletes, former athletes, the University’s, and the state of Tennessee’s program. Not hers.
The program was a dumpster fire when she took over. The women did not even have enough to compete in Cross Country her first year. They had to have 800 girls run cross country just to fill the team. In 2015 they found a girl on the club team to join the team to fill out the roster. In 2015 the men had pretty much all freshman competing. They came in 11th at SECs on both sides in cross country in 2015. The program has improved tenfold in her time. Blaase was a multi-time All American and 10K school record holder in 32:08. Zach Long won at Stanford Invite in 13:39 over studs like Tyler Day/Edwin Kurgat/Cole Rockhold/Craig Lutz, also a multi-time All American and the 3K/5K school record holder. Seymour has a chance to become All American this Spring and is the 5K school record holder. The people in this thread slandering her don't know anything about her and her coaching ability.
On the men's side results have seemed to have been improving, especially from the young core that they have.. Quick look at TFRRS Shows
FR- Anderson 8:11, 3:42
SO- Nahom 9:01 steeple
FR- Griffin 8:08
SR- Crigger 8:47 steeple
JR- Thiessen 28:59
SR- Thacker 4:01 mile, 3:43
On the women's side the trend has improved exponentially over the past 4 years.
JR- Seymour 15:36, 4:21
JR- Thronson 15:54, 10:04 steeple, 4:26
FR- Sutliff 16:47
FR- Tucker 16:56
FR- Gholar 10:21, 4:31
FR- Dixon 4:23
JR- Janke 4:21
Anderson and Griffin were Footlocker Finalists, I’d hope they would be alright. Griffin hasn’t done anything in over a year. 9:01 isn’t good. Crigger has gotten worse. Thiessen is very good. Thacker was already good and had won a NAIA title before he transferred.
Seymour is the only one. Thronson was a star in HS, I would hope she would be good. I don’t care about these average girls running 16:50s and 4:30 1500s. At what point do we stop talking about young athletes when they don’t get any better. Alford-Sullivan failed a once proud distance program.
Missing the point. She could always have four or five great athletes (you have 30 full rides to give out) and Tennessee has a lot to sell. Combined program improved from Clark but geez he was a train wreck with the men. Imagine if Henry, Flo or Holloway had been there the last 12 years. That’s the type of leader and program like Tennessee should have. Instant world class recruiting and coaching. Bows to no one. Someone to take them to the top without any excuses. A person who never sees UT as second fiddle to anyone, ever. It’s a mindset.
Overall, she may be a good figurehead and she sure knows how to be in charge and demand respect. But, she lacks a deep passion for her athletes and has always prioritized her love for winning over her team and athletes.
Beth is/was/will be only a figurehead. Nothing more.
She knows that she wants to be in charge and she doesn't have the character to earn respect.
I was told some very interesting stories by a "well informed ACC head coach" (this was over drinks so who knows how much is actually true and how much is beer muscles being flexed) about some of BAS shenanigans while coaching out west. Mucho shady.
...and to anyone who thinks that I am just jumping on the bandwagon to slam her as she's been shown the door at UT, I did have the opportunity to see her in action for many years as an inside/close periphery observer.
I know a couple of people on the track staff. Good people. I hope they keep their jobs and are not uprooted based on the revolving door that is Division I athletics and a new head coach bringing in his or her cronies.
beth will be missed and hope she moves on to something great. whether you agree or not, the team made great accomplishments this year and that is something to be proud of. stop tearing her down just because you have nothing better to do with your day.
So If you go to coaches convention, she is the one who stands up and talks the most during any debate as if she is one of the big fish. She has never won crap but you would think she was something special just watching her confidence and body language in a room full of elite coaches with big trophies. She talks down to other small college coaches and assistant coaches with a tone that is quite insulting. She overcompensate her insecurity with the bravado of condescending tone.
Yes, saw some of this behavior at the annual Coaches Conventions
