I don’t think that’s true. As I understand it, Capstone Events acquired it 2019 (see it listed on their Events page here: https://capstoneraces.com/events/) after it had already been passed around several times between orgs like Wasserman and AEG.

Back in the 1980s I ran it a couple times in high school. You had to dash side to side and around people once it was even possible to run, and then after a bit you could run the rest of the way, but I recall it taking 18 minutes to get to the starting line and I was only about halfway back. But it was fun to grab a bunch of soft drinks afterward, as they were giving away 24 packs. It'll probably recover but people liked the freewheeling atmosphere. It was a race only for those in a separate start. I remember also that there were some absolutely incredible times for the centipedes--groups that run together in a costume.
Yeah not uncommon to have centipedes down around 5:00 pace for 12k. That's 13 dudes tied together (plus antennae and stinger). The centipede record is significantly faster than that, something in the low 4:50s IIRC.
(of course, women and mixed-gender centipedes also run and have put up some great times. and the Impalas always have best group costume)
Hey, I resemble that remark!
Source? Look it up your damn self. Go walk the streets. I’m there every month and it’s not safe in some areas.
True, but that has nothing to do with a decline in B2B participants. Or any of the other major races around the country that also have seen declining participation over the past few years. But you keep on trying to turn everything into one of your "conservative" talking points.
Too much poop on the sidewalks!
I know. Hopkinton is a bad place to start Boston with the numbers they have had recently.
At its best an event unlike any other.
i ran/walked it 20 years ago. My plan had been to bandit it as a recovery run. Some friends were running it at various levels of competitiveness and I was going to jump in and out to join for parts of it. It was Impossible to move at various parts of the race due to the Overwhelming crowds. But the crowds were fun, boozed up, and friendly. I was able to get beers along the way from various groups pushing shopping carts filled with kegs. I ended up walking more of it than I expected, but had an absolute blast.

Just to clarify, the whole centipede concept was started by the Aggie Running Club. Yes, I'm a member. The Aggies were sponsored for a time by Reebok, but also Converse, ASICS and currently Hoka One One. So, that team did I actually lose to the Powerpede. Brian Maxwell was never a friend of the Aggies after 8 of us beat him at the Canadian XC Champs in 1978.
We did come back the next year and beat the Powerpede.
For awhile, didn’t the Aggie centipede guys take pride in never having lost to a female runner?
