I don't know if some of these kids are confident enough to express their disappointment to Brosnan. Besides being kids they probably look up to him for the great things he's done for them. If you look at the tremendous improvements most of them have made from last year it's hard for them to just ignore all that. But nevertheless the fact that many of them did not perform up to their expected levels and also seeing competitors who they formerly beat pass them by in qualifying has to be disappointing. I think Brosnan should be applauded for the great work he's done. Now it's time to reflect on the year and adjust training so that next year more of his kids will be in stronger positions come state qualifying.
Any criticism must be driven by jealously, right? Never mind the fact that he had a 8:52 guy run 9:17 to sneak into the next round in the last spot, a 10:29 girl run a minute slower and take last in her race, running even worse than the previous week where she bombed. In the previous week a 9:02 guy runs 9:34 and doesn't make it past prelims, a 9:17 guy runs 9:44. We're not talking about missing PR's by a few seconds because it was warm. Those are complete blow ups, all synchronized for the championship season.
How can anyone say this is NOT a stellar coaching job? One kid bombs, things happen, that many kids bomb when they're supposed to be at their best and it's most likely the coach. Suck it up and take the criticism. You earned it!
Cringe
OK, so objectively, do you think the team has performed well in the past 3 weeks? What factors contribute to your answer? I'm genuinely interested to understand another perspective.
I'd say it's pretty clear that the coach and kids knew that if they ran to that level between November and April, that they might not be able to run at the same level in May. Their biggest goals were not doing well at state. They were doing well nationally and in big opportunities that presented themselves when the iron was hot.

Sax, Broetke, Nygren, Darley, Doshi, Cantu and Appleford were doing well nationally?

It’s easier to say you’re cringy or jealous than actually discuss the merits of the criticism. I’m waiting to be called a dummy head or stupid face or some other elementary school insult.

Yeah, sounds about right. I'm sure it played out just like this.
Coach: OK team, here's the plan. We're going to run like gang busters at the Sundown and then fizzle at the CIF qualifying.
Team: Yeah coach, sounds like a great plan. I'm all in!
Look at the results. Almost the entire team pooped the bed when it counts. How is there any other conclusion than the coach royally screwed up?
Aaron S win the 800m, Samantha Wins the 3200m and 2nd in the 1600m, Morgan N PR's to make CIF finals, Ailish Hawkins PR's in the 3200m and has qualified for the 3200m and 1600m final. All their top guys are running unbelievable. Just last week they ran 3:39 and 13:43. I guess you can put blame on the coach for that too? Or maybe only when you can feel good about yourself criticizing a young girl who is struggling for reason you might not want to get into. I have been coaching HS for a long time, so your criticism is more about being uneducated and commenting on something you know nothing about.
I'm a coach somewhat close to Newbury Park and know of these kids and coach somewhat. I don't speak with the coach, but do say hi and have light conversation with.
I'm not sure you get what it's like to have a team and coach kids to the level Newbury Park has done over the past years. CIF southern section is the hardest section in the state and country to qualify out of. Newbury Park being DI also makes it even harder. You can be a 4:14 kid and not go to the state Championship or even a 9:08 kid. When you try and qualify its all or nothing lots of times. These kids have bad races and blow up fo a number of reasons. For a 9:19 kid to blow up is hard to figure out. Most of the time they go out over their head and those are the results you see. The same thing happens when you're a 13:15 guy making a world team and at the world championships they blow up at the world championships. It's not a coaching or fitness thing. They were not ready for that race on their current fitness. Not everyone will go 9:00.
Go though and see how many teams have their success at CIF in distance. It's easy to race just duel meets and run 4:25 and end you run at CIF at 4:21 and call that improvement. Now look at Newbury Park and it's unbelievable and the level they get these kids to run though out the entire year.

To make sure I understand your point, are suggesting they are running well as a team over the last 3 weeks compared to earlier in the year?
Why are there so many different threads about the Newbury Park team. Makes me believe that someone is trying a bit of real self promotion
Sure the team is good but there has never been so many threads each week about any team (HS, College or Pro)
Hard to say that there's self promotion. It's more that the boys' XC was the most dominant high school team, probably ever. From there curiosity grew to see how these kids would run in track. And when they consistently ran top performances more people followed and then they came under a magnifying glass where every meet was watched. There have been many teams with one or two top kids, but to have four running terrific times is virtually unheard of. And then it's natural to follow the rest of the better runners plus a very outspoken coach. It all comes together.
My thoughts exactly; And I don’t know how other states are exactly with track post season, but in California I think it’s very well done, since it’s truly a big deal just to even qualify for state meet and every week its a fight to survive (unless you’re a beast like Aaron Sahlman). Like, maybe to Brosnan, CIF track postseason results aren’t really that important and he just wants his kids to peak for big invitationals for the nice PRs, but I’d think the kids themselves have to be disappointed by their (relatively) lackluster CIF postseason, and would’ve rather peaked here in early-mid May rather than way earlier. Like I said, here in California at least it’s a very big deal just to qualify for state and sucks that they’ll be all missing out minus Sahlman and McDonell.
NP has clearly produced some of the nations top HS talent under his coaching. Nico has gone on to an exceptional college career. 2 runners just set some all-time exceptional marks and decided to skip further CIF competition. The athletes are achieving great success and this is translating to opportunities beyond high school. I guess I just don’t understand the need to criticize the program or coaching based on these results. I tip my hat and hope to learn a few things I can sprinkle into my program. While I am not hoping to be the next NP, our goals are not perfectly aligned, I see no reason to not think he has achieved more success, time wise, than 99.9% of all HS programs, myself included. Here’s to hoping NP and Coach Brosnan continued success and our sport maybe growing as a result.

Started following HS track again, and was amazed at the marks these NP boys ran. I still can't believe them! Did a quick search of their Coach, and found him to be the type of coach I despise. Looked at all the traveling to meets, indoors, invitationals, out of state, and it reeks of privilege. AKA spoiled little rich kids. Fact is these kids have unusual amounts of talent. And this arrogant coach has them in intense training in winter peaking them at Arcadia. You peak at State Meet in June not at April Arcadia. He deserves zero respect for doing so , and for making it ok for his athletes to skip the CIF altogether. That's not ok ! The goal is CIF state championship and that will never change. I can guarantee you these NP kids will not improve any more this year. They are burnouts. As a matter of fact I highly doubt anyone of them will ever improve their marks. They will quit running, just more victims of a cocky punk coach

Go back to when NP won NXN Nico’s senior year and watch the awards ceremony. Watch Brosnan grab that trophy. I was agnostic on him till that point but then it was clear it was all about him. He says it’s all about the kids…while he is opting into an interview or making other public comments. Get out of the spotlight dude. It’s not about you.
I agree he’s a knowledgeable coach regarding good training methods. He’s obviously got results. But I can’t stand the guy.
