Get out of America.
That won't help you if you have never had any weapons training.
There have been multiple mass shootings in TX where everybody and anybody is armed. It is a very difficult situation when these shootings often happen in a crowded environments with people running for cover.
To pull out a weapon and discharge it requires careful assessment of the situation beyond just having a gun.
The first thing would be to protect yourself and loved ones by taking cover.
Second is making sure that using the weapon does not open you up to getting shot by friend or foe. Law enforcement or other good guys on the scene have little information to go on as to who is friend or foe so be very, very careful if you choose to use your weapon especially in the crowded environment situation that you yourself don't get taken out as the bad guy with the gun.
Dug and cover is the best defense.
If you have a weapon, chances are a lot higher that you die.
The second statement is completely false.
With respect to the first statement, there are an infinite amount of possible scenarios. You seem to be talking about a mass shooting scenario. In that scenario, the best option is to run and put distance between yourself and the shooter, even if you have a gun. If someone has broken into your house in the middle of the night, the best option is to shoot them.
The best rule of thumb for a public incident is to keep yourself and your family safe, which usually means running away. Unless you are HIGHLY trained (and not just with shooting accuracy, but in dynamic real-life situations) it's a bad idea to get involved and assume the role of law enforcement. There are exceptions, but they are exceptions.
I've heard cops say this and it makes sense: "Most of the time it's better for a citizen to be a good witness vs. getting involved." Again, there are legit exceptions where you really have a duty and moral obligation to get involved and take risk, but they are the exception.
I don't want to get killed for lack of being able to shoot back.
