Gary Martin, senior at Archbishop Wood High in Warminster, Penn., is looking to run a sub four-minute mile at the Penn Relays after having broken state recor...
Lananna needs to call his boy to tell him to stop racing so much. He's going to burn himself out. Martin is doing all this just to qualify for State, then running all of it again at State. Then Brooks and then Nationals. That's an EXHAUSTING schedule, especially considering he ran hard with his 4:00, 4:01, 3:57, 1:49, and 8:41 already.
ONLy 3 events at state, he'll def run 4x8 hard, as he is anchor and team will be in the hunt. He'll have to pick one of the others for the hard effort, actually no 1600 Fri 800 sat.
These doubles, triples are a part of the history in CA, pa, NJ, NY on the road to state meets. For high quality athletes, you can train thru it, using the meets as a workout day. They can then taper in post season.
I have no idea who will show up for usatf u20 and worlds, or who will shut down for xc, but there is a lot of talent in class of 22.
Gary seems so chill-laxed about the whole thing! He's not freaking out with stress on his face or full of angst or anger. It's really remarkable to watch. He so not intimidated by anything or anyone on the track - Ha! Just go out and run and have fun!!! This is a gift and it will carry him far. He looks like he'd come over and fix your computer for free - He's gotta be the Coolest Geek that I've ever seen!!! Unlike a lot of other runners who are stuck on themselves, Gary just does his thing with joy. A lot of other runners could learn from his example.
Besides the geek thing, didn’t you just describe a few thousand HS distance runners? I don’t remember freaking out over stress, angst or anger.
Doing those three events at the PIAA meet isn't too rough. It used to be that you would have preliminaries for all of them on Friday and finals for all of them on Saturday. Now, Gary will have the 1600 final on Friday morning and the others on Saturday. Should be able to go hard in all of them.

Check out Craig Virgin’s senior season. I’d provide a link if I knew how.

Imagine running one of the greatest mile runs in US history and THIS is the only video of it? I think Jim Ryan's 1965 footage is about equal!
Gary is just scratching the surface. While the NP kids have 5-7 elite guys to train with, Gary probably has to have a relay team run intervals with him!
