In the span of five months, Gary Martin went from that guy she told me not to worry about to social media official with a baby on the way, so to speak.

Pre’s out but why in god’s name wouldn’t all the fast milers head to Brooks PR together!? Sahlman can’t say “I need pros to have competition.” He can’t even definitely say he’s the best HS miler right now. Head to head with the others close to them please. I’d rather see Colin race the top HSers at Brooks than the pros at Pre.
I think people really do not understand what goes into this sometimes. Martin is/was going to run the PIAA meet, I thought, always. All this is gravy.Shipping across country into a field well over your head even on a miracle day, is not a guarantee for success at all. He clearly runs well when running near even splits. Pre will or should be out in 55 I would think? even at 1:58 yards, he will be completely disconnected in this race. Webb managed it, so it holds some allure to many , but Webb was a 1:47.7 scratch guy and relay as well, 20 something years ago, plus 8:45 yards on a flat track walking away from a Brannen.. He was much much better..so it worked. If they want to run much faster, they used to have Mile set ups at Swarthmore, which is local to him..no travel. Find one of those types. Disrupting what has been a very successful plan to date for a "One off" NOW? To Pre...I wouldn't even recommend it.Its a possible diminished return.
By the way..let Sahlman find him, not the other way around, Martin has run faster at this point and with zero help in all his races really.
He did run for his parish CYO but was not elite. Ran at Arch champs in 2019 and placed 8th or so in the 800. Nothing that would have given you any inclination he was headed for this.

Everything considered this has to be the greatest high school distance performance of all time. I mean a 3:57 at a freaking league meet with the next guy 4:17! Unreal
Nope. Not in the top 5. However it is impressive as hell.

Alan Webb would has demolish Gary if they was contemporaries in this race.
Comparisons to Ryun aside, Gary reminds me of Craig Masback. Both nerdy and surprisingly fast. Masback ran 3:52.02, winning the U.S. Indoor Championships in 1980.
Any thoughts on how fast Gary will eventually go. I thing he will eventually better Masback's mile time.
