Female weighing 184 lifting a good 200-300lbs more total than Symmonds.
All of the males in his weight class are a good 700+ pounds above him in total.
He could probably put 20lbs on his squat by going low bar, assuming he can still get PL depth.
His Bench looks narrow, but thats just me. I doubt he's putting much effort in trying to figure out how to actually lift the most weight by adjusting his grip width. I also don't see much arch or leg drive, +10-20lbs there easy.
He seems built well for the DL. When he stands up his knuckles are even with the bottom of his junk. Watch people Deadlift and notice how long their arms are. Those with arms in relation to their torso will pull mountains. The sumo pullers tend to be lighter or have shortish arms. I am built like a T-Rex but I pull conventional because Sumo feels slow as heck off the floor. My explosiveness is nil!

I don't disagree with anything you say, but I avoided criticizing his strength levels. They picked a nice low-key meet where he 'got the bronze medal' and people on YouTube all hope he can return for gold. It is a bit hilarious and you could easily find meets where he would be a distant last.
I will happily train someone with lower potential to have fun and do their best as long as they take it seriously. His 8 week program which of course he is selling is very poorly constructed.
A perfect training cycle has no failed reps. You want confidence and optimism and extra recovery heading into meet week.
I'll try not to dwell on it as I'm sure he's off to the next great YouTube challenge.
He's not seriously into powerlifting. His training was not properly planned and included many of his fitness challenge diversions that he wouldn't do if he was focused on the meet. He showed up without proper equipment and was lucky to borrow a singlet. You want to do your weigh in and equipment check as quickly and smoothly as possible so you can go relax and eat. He hadn't practiced the rules and commands. He didn't bring a coach who had seen his training efforts and could choose better weight selections at the meet.
I doubt he's interested in taking it more seriously given all his pursuits.
Yea, looks like he did this on a lark. His singlet looked too big. To the uninformed he looks like he's actually competing. I mean he did say he was 3rd place at some point. But these PL meets are so ridiculously top heavy you could have a guy in third with a 1100 total and first at 2000+ and have only a handful of guys at any wt class.
He's a fitness buff with a youtube channel. He's not that strong by fitness youtuber standards, nor that fast anymore.
A few months ago in another lifting thread I mentioned I had a 60+ year old and 190 pound friend who entered a powerlifting competition. This hobby lifter with a normal 40 hour work week lifts about 1030. Of course the letsrun faithful stated that was mediocre yet somehow some are impressed by a younger Olympic middle distance runner who has years of training under his belt.
I'm impressed with Simmons or anyone who is committed to health and fitness but this was not a great athletic feat.

Interesting, I just checked and my knuckles go comfortably below junk level. I do find deadlifts easier with my squat at barely even 0.75x of DL.

such jealousy. you know he has the record for fastest 400m run & 400lb deadlift? He even will pay people if they beat it....
Nick Symmonds was a very good to almost great 800m runner. Nick Symmonds was a very good 1500m runner. Nick Symmonds' ability to weight lift, considering he weighs 185 lbs. today and is under age 40 is not impressive. Your thread lacks merit.

Unless a person is a world class weight lifter, wrestler or American football lineman on defense, deadlift is foolish. Risk of injury far out weighs athletic achievement except for the narrow exceptions listed. Very few people care about deadlift. Does a great deadlift mean one will put shot greater than 23 meters? No. Does a great deadlift mean one sprint 100m sub-9.90? No. Does a great deadlift mean will triple jump 18 meters? No. Useless.

Deadlifting can be a pursuit for it's own sake, of interest and relevant to few. It can be dangerous. This is no different than the triple jump. Who knows who Christian Taylor is and cares that he went beyond 18m? There is no intrinsic value in any of this. He takes risks in his event also and in fact is recovering from a torn Achilles (something you won't get deadlifting).
This a running forum. Running is an element of Track & Field. Niche deadlifters need their own site. Actually you weightlifting gals & guys do have your own site. You must have gotten lost powerlifter. Hopefully you can find your weightlifting web site.

I enjoy running and am a T&F fan. I didn't start this thread, but I have added some perspective. Runners often include weight lifting in their training and ask questions here. I have decades of experience from which to steer someone in the right direction.

Jealous? I'm 25 years older and 25 pounds lighter and never pretended to be much of an athlete.
He's pretty arrogant to challenge people on his YouTube channel. You'd think a former world class athlete would have a bit of humility. I don't remember Joe Falcon challenging runners to a bench press competition.
The fastest 400 and deadlift? Big deal there are other 38 year olds still competing in their respective disciplines on an international level not chasing novelty events.
Again I'm impressed with anyone committed to fitness but Symmonds' ego is much bigger than his deadlift.

Same here with the knuckles. Have long arms, very long femurs and hip flexibility like the chinese weightlifters.
5'10" 170 40-something
Expected fitness after 6 months of lifting following 6+ months of no lifting DL 395-425 Squat 275-295 Bench 285-305
Fitness after 6 months of no lifting DL 275-295 Squat 135-175(it'll for sure cause a high-hamstring strain though) Bench 185-205
For me personally, deadlifting feels like one of the safest lifts I can do. It comes very naturally.
Watching Nick's video, what really amazes me is this: A natural-born wrestler represented the USA in an Olympic 800. How crazy is that?

What threads of value have you started?
+1, thanks, @Powergeezer, Alan and others have been helpful with advice when I started lifting because of running injuries. I just don’t have the mental energy to track another forum, especially since I’m just a hobbylifter.
Of all the crap that gets discussed on LR, weightlifting is hardly the most irrelevant. :)

there have been studies showing correlation with running and deadlift. for instance meb and jordan hasay have deadlifted twice their body weight
Symmonds is a smarter guy than he appears. When he does these things, he always knows in advance what he can do and hits a mark that is not a stretch for him, which is how we never see him miss and he always hits his target splits to the second. So, I believe that he set goals for the video that he knew he could lift and didn't go over them. Maybe he won't dead lift 500 lbs but he had more in the tank that day than he showed. It's hard for me to judge, but it looks as if there is no end of guys at the gym that could do something similar to what he did, relative to their weight class.
