Where are there great vertical ascents around the world that make for great runs? I'm looking for 1 km or more where you can do training runs and day trips up and down in a single day, instead of ultramarathon distances or long backpacking trips. Preferably no paved roads full of cars, and just goes straight up.
For reference, 1 km = 3,280 ft.
There are many mountains around the world where you'll be doing rock climbing or even using ice axes and oxygen tanks. We're not looking for those of course.
Of the top of my head, I can think of:
USA
- Mount Wilson, Los Angeles and San Gabriel Mountains area
- (maybe) Santa Cruz Mountains, SF Bay Area, but the ascents generally aren't 1 km
- Manitou Incline near Colorado Springs, but it only goes up for 2,000 ft. or 600 m. Still tough due to the altidude though, so it's a great workout.
Europe
- Ben Nevis, Scotland
- Mount Olympus, Greece, ascending from Litochoro
- Mount Parnitha outside Athens, Greece
- Mount Athos, Greece (theoretically), but it's very hard to get visas since it's a strictly controlled Orthodox Christian pilgrimage site, and I haven't read reports of people actually running up there
- Fully Vertical Kilometre in Switzerland
- Sierra Nevada in Spain and many other mountain peaks along the Spanish coast
- Montserrat, Catalonia, Spain, just shy of 1 km prominence
Asia
- Tai Mo Shan, Hong Kong
- Yangmingshan north of Taipei, Taiwan (tends to be paved over with cobblestone or concrete paths everywhere though)
- Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai, Thailand
There are also many volcanoes in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Oceania, but they can get very technical and have poorly developed infrastructure, which means poorly maintained or even non-existent trails.
Anywhere else?
