Due to alleged speculation, Head Coach Caryl Smith Gilbert removes athletes on the team to pay for new freshmen. She has been removing athletes to acquire their scholarships due to her financial over-promise to incoming freshman. Her reasoning for removing the athletes off the team? Underperforming. Ironically, those who have been “underperforming”, have been injured and prevented from competing in the 2021-2022 season. Indeed, those removed have been running faster times than those she allowed to remain on the team.
Meanwhile… rumor has it she has been under close watch from the athletic department, since this is only her first year at UGA. Will the athletes removed be able to pay for their education personally? In college sports, many athletes go to a school that will pay for their education. Due to NCAA rules, if an athlete wants to stay on the team, they must forfeit their scholarship and return as a walk-on. How can one justify this decision? It is a business, at the end of the day.
