I'm a teacher. Starting pay with a bachelor's degree for my district is $48k. You get to $60k after 16 years, or 13 years + masters or 10 years + doctorate.
It is decent pay for a very easy job. I wouldn't say I am paid highly, but also my quality of life is pretty comfortable, as I think it should be for a teacher.
But yes, we get a lot of time off, and that's rad.
Thank you for the honest assessment.
So an honest assessment is one you agree with?
If they had said the opposite to wha you agree with, would you have still thanked them for their honesty?
Or is your measuring stick for 'honesty' and 'agrees with me' the same stick?
We’re not talking starting salary. That would be after getting a bachelors plus additional ed requirements and working 15 or so years.
Any job that requires a degree should earn more than that.
65k for 180 days of the year is a lot. Teachers never have to work 40 hours per week. Anyone who says teachers work more than 40 hours per week is lying.

The money isn't bad, but many teachers have a 7 hour day and spend more than another hour a day, and a few on weekends, grading papers and doing other paperwork. Obviously not all but most of those with whom I worked.

wow, amazing argument. why waste your time typing it?

Most teachers do not have a 7 hour day, they have free periods. You don't have to do grading every day, most teachers only have to grade once every few weeks. Grade assignments during class while the students are doing another assignment or watching a movie.

I taught high school, high school and middle school teachers do. 34 students × 5 classes creates quite a bit of grading- quizzes, homework, papers. Try grading 150+ essays. Regarding free periods, where I worked we had meetings 3 times a week, mandatory parental outreach once a week and some teachers had building assignments.
California teachers need to shut up. 6 figures is what they all seem to make, and they still complain about having to learn how to use Zoom. Give me a break. 6 figures to babysit? They only complain as it’s hard to buy a home here making “only” six figures. For 6 months of work. What a scam. As someone above so accurately stated, they can’t seem to be fired either even though lesson plans are recycled every year. Teachers in CA appear very well fed, too.

I only know three teachers personally. One goes in at 6 AM every day and leaves at 4:30-5:00 and makes about 65k (close to retirement). The other two are married and have three kids. They still go in at about 7:00 and leave around 5 and make about 50k and 60k. Op obviously is biased and trying to provoke a reaction... But it still needs called out.

No you are full of it. How many math teachers are grading essays? Do your PE teachers grade essays? If you are an English teacher and you give all of your classes essays due on the same day, then you deserve your 50 hour week. If you are really swamped, just put the To Kill A Mockingbird movie on like every other english teacher in the world and grade during that.
You can grade one class's exams or quizzes while another class is taking the quiz. You are the teacher, nobody is making you grade everything overnight. The only way to have more than 30 hours per week is if you deliberately do everything in the dumbest and most efficient way possible.
So I assume you are going to raise the pay and fire the underperforming teachers? I would like to hear how you are going to do that. My sister-in-law taught PE in Bellflower, California, she gets $100,000/year in retirement. She doesn't even know who our current vice president is. Nice person, though. To get fired in California you basically have to have sex with a student or get caught doing drugs during the work day.
Whiner Beer Co. focuses on barrel-aged beer, a tradition common in Belgium and France that is gaining foothold in the US. Industry veterans and partners Brian Taylor and Ria Neri aim to make beers for people with a wanderlust...

POTUS doesn't even know who the current vice president is, and he makes $400K/year.

Here's a math problem for you: The math teacher has 5 classes , each with 34 students. She grades the homework of each class on a different day of the week. She takes 2 minutes grading each student's work. How much time per night does she spend on homework.
Many PE coaches spend an additional 2 hours after school and time on the weekends coaching. Where I worked we were given a stipend of 96 hours of pay for the whole cross country season (about 3 thousand dollars extra pay).
So Roy, are you saying your son's 3rd grade teacher was overpaid? Or did a bad job because they were underpaid?Do you think that teacher will ever get fired? Do you think a PE teacher should make the same as a physics/chemistry/math teacher? In a pretty world , we would not be judged by our results or have to worry about a business deal that goes wrong. Unless you work in the public sector I am pretty sure that you, like many of us , drive to work with a small amount of primal fear, wondering what employee problem, client problem, etc, could spring up and effect your ability to pay your mortgage. And I bet you know a few attorneys who are bright, make less per hour than your son's 3rd grade teacher after considering the amount of hours they work per year, and who will not be able to get a $100,000 year in retirement. Not to mention a teacher can go to a junior college for 2 years, a state college for 2 years, and a year to get a teaching credential. And get a job with a C average. And not be $300,000 in debt like many attorneys, physicians, pharmacists, etc.
Anyway, not an attack on you, (not that you would care) just trying to see what you are thinking

It's funny you are trying so hard (and failing) to describe how teachers work 8 hour days for only 180 days per year.
Most salaried jobs require 60+ hours per week and your boss can call you at 3pm on Saturday and demand that you come into work immediately to fix an issue. Being a teacher is one of the only jobs where it's nearly impossible to get fired. Your entire english class can be illiterate and the board of ed will still let them graduate and you'll still get your annual pay increase as per your union contract.

Your are very salty and very delusional. Think back to your good teachers and thank them in your head and move on.

I am not talking about other jobs, I am not discussing salaries and how many days a year a teacher works. We're not comparing the difficulty of various professions. We're not discussing tenure. We're discussing whether or not teachers do additional work outside their 7 hour day. I know they do.
If you read my other posts you'd know that I never complained about my salary. Again my response to you was only about the hours that teachers work per day.
It's obvious that your English Language Arts teachers failed you by putting on movies and I suspect you have a reason to hate teachers but again most of those I know work more than 7 hours a day.
