It's hard to predict these things. Unlike their high school races where they dictate the pace they'll both probably tuck in somewhere. If the guys up front set a good pace then they'll get pulled along and we might see sub 3:40 and sub 13:50. But if the pace dawdles then their times could be slower. I think the end result will be more of a function of the pace rather than them having "burned out."
I also don't like the idea that top athletes can blow off their State Championships because they're too good for it. Skipping CIF seems like a huge show of disrespect and self-centeredness.
Any coach that has spent decades in California understands and appreciates the prestige of the State Meet. Colin had a great chance to set a state meet record (or two) that might have stood for a long time, but he won't even run it.
They could have run State, outdoor nationals in June, as well as other open meets after the high school season finishes.
This is why Newbury Park is so fast. They make smart decisions. The CIF southern section is 5 weeks of racing in a row. If they decided to race the state meet then do HS Nationals they are fried by mid June. No other section in California has to do what they do in order to reach the state meet. It's not healthy for a HS kids to do that. They don't owe anyone anything. If anyone needs to change it's CIFSS. The CIFSS has had top athletes skip the state championship in the past and I expect it to happen even more if these kids keep running fast.
Good for them for doing what best for their bodies and their health
Let’s not pretend they would have to “race” 5 weeks in a row. They could jog 4 of them and advance with no disruption in their training plan.
You do not want to run a mile, 800m or 3200m every 7 days for 5 weeks. That is not ideal for training / racing. They would still have to run the 3200m at 9:00 , 800m at 1:52 and mile at 4:10 to make it safe. It is not a smart move. And at the end of the day to people who are bent out of shape for not running CIF, they do not know what is best for the kid. Only the athlete, parent and coach know that. All this other talk about knowing what is best about someone they do not know is all BS.
Remember GF did not have all those rounds when he ran 4:00 and 8:34 at the state meet. It's their decision and good for Newbury Park and those kids. They know what they are doing and have proved that over and over again.

Here’s Craig Virgin’s schedule during his senior year:
5/05 8:46.6 & 4:11.8 relay Orphan Relays 5/15 8:54.0 Cahokia Invite 5/18 8:53.6 & 4:10.9 District 5/21 8:48.6 & 4:08.5 Meet of Champions 5/25 4:10.0 State meet heat 5/26 8:42.6 & 4:12.2 State finals 6/01 4:05.5 Top 10 meet 6/09 8:40.9 Intl Prep Invite - HS 2 mile record
Running 9:00 a couple of times will be no problem for the NP kids. Skipping the state will be unprecedented, they won’t be tripling in the meets and they will be “safe” in any scenario.

This would be why Newbury Park is successful. They don't listen to advise like this. They don't owe you or anyone at CIF a thing. It's really that simple. They can do what they want to do. Others have skipped CIF and it will continue to happen year after year.

I find it funny that some people think NP makes all the "smart" decisions and some people think they make all the "dumb" decisions. Even more entertaining are those who think the coach is making the "smart" decisions, but isn't responsible for the "dumb" decisions on the same team or vice versa. If you think not running CIF is the smart move, how do you defend Aaron Sahlman running CIF or all the other kids on the team running CIF (some of who are doubling and tripling through the rounds)?
Also, according to the coach, he isn't responsible for making the decisions and says it's the kid's choice, so how is it people say the coach is doing the right/good or wrong/bad thing?
There are haters and fan boys who will have the same opinion regardless of the decision.

I keep thinking how mind blowing it is that a kid would value running a 5k at a random off the beaten path meet over competing for a state title with your peers, for your school, in a packed stadium and put your name in the record books forever. To each their own, but hard to understand.

We all need to agree to disagree.
Agree. Hope it’s what makes them happy in the long run.

I would say a meet with a solid handful of recent Olympians, including Jakob Ingebrigtsen, is a little better than “a random off the beaten path meet,” never mind the Pre Classic in 3 weeks.

But they ARE too good for it lol. Think Lukas Verzbicas's highschool resume is tainted with no track state titles? When we debate all time greats no one mentioned state titles. Earlier in this thread someone said it works be a failure for young if he doesn't break 14 lol
Austin Tamagno was the last big CA distance talent to skip the CIF postseason in pursuit of loftier goals. How did that work out?
How did running CIF workout for 90% of track athletes? Most don't have college success, either way. It's about making the right choice for that individual person. Something good coaches do. Aaron Sahlman who is one of their top guy who has run a 8:01 3k and 1:48 800m is still running CIF. He is also focussing on the 800m only. Choices for that individual athlete are being made. You or I don't have a right to say what's best.

Neither of them are running against those recent olympians. There are almost certainly future olympians that will be competing at the CA state meet. Have you been to a Sound Running meet? They are off the beaten path.
