Jesuit once again shows its depth and young talent
Gorze wins this mile, right? I realize he’s stronger at longer events, but I still see him dropping a big PR and winning by over a second as long as he is fit and healthy.
My kid, who is an average, normal HS runner, has worked with Pascal Dobert and Eliot Heath. Not because we have gone out of our way to seek out excellent coaching, but simply because those are the kind of coaches who show up at the local weekend clinic in Oregon.
And back in the fall, the whole team also got to go to a State XC after-party at Shalane's house because the coaches are friends with Shalane's husband. There are a lot of very well-informed people in the triangle between UO, NikeHQ, and Portland. They all love the sport, have kids who are involved in the sport, and love to share that expertise.
The level of knowledge at any track meet is shocking. For example I was talking about the 1500 to a new co-worker and he said, "oh, yeah, I know, I ran the 15 the the trials." These kind of people are everywhere in Oregon.

No one has even mentioned the most bad ass athlete in the state....
Mia Brahe-Pedersen... 11.25, 22.95, 22.89i. And just she just turned 17 a few months ago.
Yep! A real HS Junior. And she is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. It is normal for sprinters to have some swagger, but MBP is just 100% a good person. She let's her running tell the story.
p.s. At Oregon Relays, a finish line photo from the 100m would have had no other athletes even in the frame. MBP was so far ahead it looked like there were two different races going on.
Jesuit OR intersquad meet
Jesuit OR freshman class - 1500 times
Williams - 4:11
Wroblewski - 4:12
Fletcher - 4:23
Welsh - 4:33
Donnelly - 4:46
This does not include any middle schoolers going to Jesuit next year.
Here are the top HS 800 runners in the WHOLE country; the math doesn't add up because the whole state of Oregon only has like 3 million people.
1. 12 Aaron Sahlman 1:49.07 CA Newbury Park
2. 11 Xai Ricks 1:49.19 CA Poly (Long Beach)
3. 11 Tyler Mathews 1:49.32 AZ Red Mountain
4. 12 Andrew Regnier 1:49.35 WI Waunakee
5. 12 William Heslam 1:49.79 OR Roosevelt (OR)
6. 12 Carter Cutting 1:50.07 OR Wilsonville
p.s. I got to meet and talk to Carter Cutting today; he seems like a super down-to-earth kid who is going to do very well at BYU. They got a great recruit!
Also, Oregon has 10 boys under 3:55 in the 1500 (and 10 of the top 20 in the USA). Imagine being a HS kid in 3:54 shape and not really even being in the mix at State?
The 3000m is even deeper. Oregon with 18 boys under 8:40 in the 3000 (we run the 15/3 instead of the 16/32 out here). It used to be that if you could break 8:40 in the 3000m, you were a contender at State. Now you might not even make the lead pack!
Franklin OR is losing 5 varsity seniors, but…
They return these 3000 times:
Nelson - 11 - 8:54
Courcelle - 10 - 8:55
McQuillen - 10 - 8:55
McEwen - 10 - 8:59
Horner - 11 - 9:01
Irvine - 9 - 9:58
They also return Haywood-O'Ne (junior) who ran a 16:27 at XC districts.
Out of the guys in this group, Nelson and McEwen were the only ones who were in the top 7 last XC season
this is so hilarious IMO. People betting on the who is going to be the next Olympian based on the time of some 17 yr olds with delayed puberty who are going to crash and burn due to REDS or some random injury they could've avoided by toning down their inflated egos and sense of importance.
So, which Oregon prep result is better?
Oregon boasts a pretty good HS female sprinter also

Looking up HS track times and seeing 1500/3000 is just painful. I feel so sorry for those athletes. They lose their iconic Portland REI and they run weird (for HS) distances.
