This outdoor season, just in Oregon, there are 15 high schoolers under 8:25 for 3000m or 9:00 for 3200m. There are also 9 high schoolers under 4:10 for the full mile.
These top times look a lot like California, which has 17 under 9:00 and 8 under 4:10 (for 1600). California also has OVER 9 TIMES Oregon's population.
Has any state put up per-capita numbers like this before? There's a HS running boom going on right now, but there aren't many athletes of this caliber anywhere in the US.
Newbury Park has 6 or 7 guys under or around 9. Probably 6 or so at 4:10 or so since 4:20 isn't that fast to them. For just one school that's worth paying attention to. They probably account for half or more of Cali's big numbers.
What is the population of NP? How many sub 8:55 (3200m) per capita? How does that per capita number compare with the Oregon per capita numbers?

There are 44,356 residents in Newbury Park
You also have to remember that almost no one on the NPHS varsity team actually lives in Newbury Park

If you remove the Young bros and the Sahlman bros from NP over the past bunch of years, how good is this team overall? Brosnan clearly found two families with extreme talent, but no one had heard of NP prior to the Youngs and Sahlmans and I'd venture to say no one will hear of them afterward.

This excuse has been debunked a thousand times. Newbury Park under Brosnan had boys not in those families running 8:44, 8:50’s and sophomore’s running 9:00 for 3200 and let’s not forget the girls running 4:36 in the 1600m , a girls national 4x1600m record. The list goes on and on.
And you’re correct no one will hear about Newbury Park anymore because coach Brosnan has left Newbury Park

People do pay attention to Oregon high school runners since at least Prefontaine 50 years ago. Get over yourself and quit playing the victim--pathetic.

Without those brothers and Martinez, this year, it would likely have been: Seymour, Cantu, Doshi, Shetty and Schohn as the top 5. 6 and 7 would have been Dickran and Guevara. Pretty young squad overall. In this group, seems like Doshi and Schohn are the only ones that both never transferred and live in the NP district
More like this a rare year where Oregon HS running might actually have a chance of living up to the disproportionate amount of hype it's received since the days of Prefontaine.
Its a small population base that thinks they're hot stuff just because Nike and UO are in their backyard while they overtrain to win some weak state meets.
Jesuit boys team is probably gonna struggle to make NXN this coming fall because of the senior class they lost and how good Crater, CDA, and Rocky Mountain will be. But they should have no issues with returning to NXN in 2024.
Gorze isn’t entered at Arcadia or Brooks PR, which is surprising. Anyone know his racing plans? Based on what he’s done in the past I would expect to see him at some college or pro meets, but I haven’t heard anything.
