UPDATE: Katelyn Tuohy entered at USATF Outdoor Championships
entered in both 1500m and 5000m but will scratch one event (most likely the 1500m)
i checked it, she still ranks high despite adding the times of the other american runners in outdoor 2021 and indoor 2022 (within june 21, 2021 - 2022)
katelyn's goal is to go under the world standard which is just 4 seconds off her PR
should be easy right? if shes not going to feel sick like in nationals, she's going to PR fo sure!
The one thing I am sure about is nothing is sure. But if she feels good and the pace is reasonable she has a shot at sub 15:10
shes quite good at hanging at a fast pace, this will be the best field she has ever faced yet, im so excited for her ... not nervous because nothing is at stake.. im banking on the sub 15:05 at best
How do you know she can hang at a fast pace? 76 Americans have run faster than her. And she has a lot to lose. She will get skewered here if she gets crushed. She may have nothing to lose in your mind but she doesn't want to lose to college women and she doesn't want to get embarrassed. Only you and a few others will rationalize that it was okay if she loses by 200 meters.

That’s right nothing is for sure. Once again the very people who are her fans are adding unnecessary pressure on her. That’s look at some hard truths here…..Tuohy has never run this late into the track season, never has tried to make a U.S. team, and is obviously tired from a great season! She was totally spent after that win, and she should be after everything she accomplished this season. I think she will have a hard time PRing at the trials, and I think it is unlikely that she breaks 15:10, and not because she is not capable, but because her body and mind need a break.
Personally, I would not even run her except that I know she needs the experience to be more prepared for the 2024 trials. Also, because she is obviously tired and does not have a shot at making the team, I would have had her run the 1500 instead of the 5000. No doubt the 5k is her best event, but I would have her continue to get her 1500 time down to help her 5000. Plus the stress is higher in 1500, more good experiences.
I just think everyone should lower their expectations and predictions at this point and just let the poor girl run and see what happens. She is capable of doing what everyone thinks, and she may just do it, but if she does not it would be no surprise at all based on a very long season. It took all she had to win because she is tired.
She is not running with any expectation of making the team. It is just a good experience and a good chance to increase her racing IQ. I initially took the same view you are taking about it being a long season and the need to rest. Heck I was against her running the 5000m at the ACCs, knowing how athletes tend to wear down during the outdoor season and the pitfalls of running one race too many. But I came around. Getting more race experience, learning about positioning, getting comfortable in a pack, learning to run when tired and not at your best.
As to the trials, all the pressure is off. Maybe she is too tired to run a PB. Maybe she gets a bounce and runs great like at Club Nationals the week after NXN. She gets the experience, adds some tools to the toolbox, and if she PBs, cool. If not, so what?
