I was referring to the artillary against the Japanese. It was ineffective because they were underground, in caves... It simply did not work.
In reading about the battle I was always confused why they did not just leave the mountain to the Japanese and occupy the airport side of the island maintaining a front in between while choking off supply lines. I guess you had to be there.
Also, unrelated. The famous raising of the flag happened long before victory and was also staged foir the cameras after the actual event took place. An iconic image for the Pacific theater.
