McGoldrick tops women in Turkey Trot

Dallas' Michelle Byrne McGoldrick returned to her throne Thursday morning.
Competing in the 38th Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot after a two-year hiatus, McGoldrick was the women's winner in the eight-mile downtown event for the fourth time, finishing in 45 minutes, 57.63 seconds. McGoldrick, 32, has slowly eased back into competitive running after giving birth to daughter Mazie Maeve 15 months ago.
After being able only to jog during her pregnancy, McGoldrick has competed in five runs this year. She placed fifth in the Cross Country Club of Dallas Half Marathon in 1:20:58 this month and was first in the Angel Run 5K last month in 16:48.
McGoldrick has a training partner in Mazie Maeve, who McGoldrick pushes in a baby jogger when getting in her roadwork.
"It felt great," said McGoldrick, a former All-American on the University of Arkansas' cross country team. "A perfect day. The weather was great. It's always great to run here because all of the area runners run. It's a great way to kick the holiday off."
As for the rest of her Thanksgiving Day, the Richardson Pearce High School cross country state champ said it would mirror that of many other Americans.
"We're going to eat a lot all day," McGoldrick said. "Lots of food and football."
Both have hand in victory: Logan Sherman's plan of someday finishing a race hand in hand with friend Scott MacPherson always had a hitch.
"I was always too slow for him," said Sherman, 19, a Pearce grad.
Not Thursday. The two were the first finishers in the eight-mile run in 40:42.89, crossing the line with arms raised, hand in hand. Race officials awarded Sherman first and MacPherson second.
"He's one of my good friends, and we don't want to kill each other in a fun race like this," said MacPherson, 18, a Plano High grad.
The two have known each other since Sherman was a Pearce sophomore. Both have impressive resumes. Sherman won the 2004 Class 4A 3,200-meter state final in a record-breaking time of 9:08.14. He won the 2004 1,600 state final in 4:19.55. MacPherson is a four-time state champ, winning the cross country final twice and the 3,200 twice.
Because Plano is Class 5A and Pearce was 4A, the two never met in the postseason.
MacPherson just concluded his freshman season with Arkansas' cross country team. Sherman said he is transferring from Texas A&M.
Sherman has had an eventful fall. He had five-hour heart surgery at Dallas' Baylor University Medical Center Sept. 23 to cure an accelerated heartbeat.
"They said take a week off," Sherman said. "After three or four days, I was back to jogging."
And now he's running full speed.
"This was fun," Sherman said. "Scott is a very good runner. Very dedicated. It's a tough course with a couple of hills. But the course is well marked."
