would be great to see Frias and Engelhardt in a 3200/2M v. Cook just to put any speculation to rest.
That wouldn't be a close race. Dalia Frias just ran a 3200 all out in 9:55. Natalie Cook just ran that same 9:55 for the first 3200 of a 5k, and then KEEP GOING for ANOTHER 1800!
Cook vs any high school girl in the 3200/2 mile wouldn't be close.

Cook is obviously the favorite, but did you even watch Frias run at Arcadia? She ran solo the last 6 laps making it look like she was doing a tempo run in the sense lap 8 looked just the same as laps 3-7. That's not what an all-out effort looks like. And it's very difficult to truly run all-out when you're all alone and know you're going to win.
She definitely has more in her than a 9:55. Enough to beat Cook? I wouldn't bet on that, but I'd be interested to see them actually race.

I agree with this. But I would rather see Cook take on Frias and Engelhardt in the mile.

Me too. The mile would be more competitive than a 2 mile. Cook has said she would like to break the mile record so she's going to try a mile at some point.
I think Frias and Engelhardt have a slight edge over Cook in the mile, but it would be close and I wouldn't count Cook out.

Yes, I watched Frias at Arcadia. Did you watch Cook at New Balance Nationals Indoors?
Cook ran the 2nd half of that race solo and finished in 9:44. Frias ran 9:55 and that was outdoors.
9:44 indoors is way better than 9:55 outdoors.
Actually just watched it for the first time, glad you asked.
Some thoughts...
The races played out very differently. 14 girls in Cooks race, but she got a great start and almost immediately had separation with Perez and Shea leading her until just before the mile. Contrast that with Frias who toed the line with 28 girls and got a less than ideal start being boxed in the first 350m or so (chopping her stride, pushing with a few girls due to lack of space) before moving out to lane 3 and accelerating up to the front to go through the first lap in 78.5 v. Cook getting out in 72.7 running on the rail the entire time.
Perez and Shea were still within .5 seconds of Cook (1 length gap from Cook to Perez) with 1200m to go. With 1200m to go Frias had about a 4 second gap, which might not sound like much but that's what I'd call actually being solo, whereas a 1 length gap is not.
Watching the last lap you see Cook biting her lower lip a few times, just a slight grimace and nothing wrong with that, but she appears to me to have dug a little deeper than Frias.
As for indoors being slower than outdoors, it doesn't always work like that. Especially when you're talking about a 6 lane indoor track with very mild banking. Keep in mind there are quite a few runners that have PRs indoors like Rupp in the 800/mile/3000 and only 2 seconds slower in the 5000 indoor, Cheserek has prs indoor in the 1500/mile/3000 and only 4 seconds slower in the 5000. It's not like the "old days" when indoors was almost universally slower than outdoors.
And Arcadia's track isn't the fastest outdoor track around by any means. Azusa's is certainly faster, which is where Frias went 4:35.06 for the mile.
Having watched the NB race now, I definitely think Frias could be very close and possibly outkick Cook if she could stayed attached long enough.
Any ideas if Ellie Shea is racing outdoors? Looks like her last race was that NB Indoors 2 mile on March 13.
She just won the mile easily at district. Now moving on in Texas to bi district, then regionals and then State. Her teammates from the winning 4xmile record are doing well too. Three of those girls had never run an indoor season before. Local news here finally got to the hometown heroes story on WFAA ABC last night. This is the freshman girl's first year of track. I think Natalie's father has the team just where he wants them right now. 6-6A district champs.
I haven't heard anything regarding Ellie Shea recently. She doesn't get talked about as much as some of the other girls but she has a ton of talent. Hopefully she is healthy and training hard and will take another shot at Natalie Cook in June in a 3200/2 mile at one of the national meets.

Ellie Shea finished only 6 seconds behind USA indoor 1500 winner Heather MacLean. That's very impressive!

thanks Bob. interesting/impressive to see the back to back to back races at NB Indoors. she really put a lot of work in over about a 48ish hour period there.
i noticed the same watching the NB Indoor 2M earlier today regarding positioning and Cook not wasting any energy.
not too sure why people get upset at me sometimes when sharing info or perspective and doing the footwork providing links, but i'm guessing you can relate. like yo it's just my opinion of possible potential to consider, take it easy folks.

Engelhardt just ran a solo 9:50. These girls are at least in the same ballpark as Cook.
Cook ran a super casual 9:52/4:45 at her district meet on friday. you could tell dad said DONT push too hard on these. lots of watch glancing trying to stick to a pace and then immediately turning around and cheering on teammates in the same race. in both races she got out quick then basically put it on autopilot after like 120 meters. and if she can run 9:52 in her sleep (and 9:44 with an 11 second negative split like she did in New York) I think shes in a place where she could threaten Cain's record. Maybe I dont even need to say that anymore after the 5K record. But I dont think Frias or Engelhardt could manage that at this point. She would leave them behind like she does everyone else.
Not sure about the mile though. she has yet to run faster than mid 4:40s so Im becoming more and more curious what she does when she finally throws the hammer down at that distance. I feel like her running the mile is like Engelhardt running the 800. shes likely capable of gutting out a really impressive time but 4:33? her true strength is at longer distances.
Carrie Tool had an interesting podcast interview with her mom the other day. mom said shes right now at 24 miles/5 days a week and that theyve stuck with the low mileage/cross training approach because her arches are really high which is what has lead to injuries in the past in her calves and achilles. its just a product of her natural gait. no simple form change in the cards like so many "experts" here have suggested without knowing her from Adam. but she anticipates she will "figure out" increasing her mileage once she starts running in college. hope so...

Natalie Cook is in a class by herself. People here can't seem to understand that, because in other years a girl like Frias or Engelhardt running 9:50 - 9:55 would make them the best in the country.
But this isn't other years. This is Natalie Cook's year. Wait until Cook takes a crack at the 3200/2 mile national record to see what she can really do. It will be FAST!

Was this meet streamed? Are Natalie Cook's 2 races on video somewhere?
Near the beginning of the live stream it mentions that Natalie Cook recently won the 3200 in 9:52, but the race apparently happened before the live stream started.
