Was the popularity of disco just that it was tolerated so you could take drugs and score with intoxicated women or did anyone actually enjoy the music? I don’t get it at all.
It was a fad in music. Like any other musical fad, most of it sucked, but some still resonates to this day. The Bee Gees were actually pretty good.
in general, the people who liked it had lousy musical taste and got into it because they were told to. The same people listen to hip hop today, which sucks more than disco ever did.

If I could play any scene in moviedom history, this is it.
Quizás una de las mejores escenas de baile de todos los tiempos de la película "Fiebre del Sábado por la Noche", cuando John Travolta baila, "BAILA"... todos...

The people who listened to disco are probably not listening to hip hop.
In the NY area you had many disco fans who loved dancing to it as in Saturday Night Fever, you had your classic rockers, soft rock, the punk rockers and locals Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen. Disco was huge even Donald Trump was into it.
The mid-late 1970s were a depressing time. You had the hangover of the retreat from VietNam. The Nixon/Watergate scandal. Gas price shocks. High interest rates, unemployment, inflation.
Disco was a bright, joyful spark in an otherwise dreary few years.

Agree with this 100%, so I can't understand why hip hop has not faded away by now. Disco was popular for ten years or so, tops, where hip hop has been around for a lot longer than that, and sadly shows no signs of going away.
My personal belief is that people are hesitant to come right out and say that hip hop is not good music, since you will be accused of being a racist if you do so.

It was big when I was in high school (I hated it, liked Zappa). It wasn't for listening, it was for people to dance to. From my perspective it seemed to be more of a white middle and upper class phenomenon. It was very plastic and irritating.
Disco wasn't my thing even though I was around in its heyday.
Some of the dumbest songs ever are disco songs. Carwash for one. Man, that song sucks hard.
I will say though that some Bee Gees stuff was pretty good. The groove in Stayin' Alive is pretty great. You Should be Dancing is pretty good. Still, I prefer classic rock and even a lot of pop over disco.
www.dahl.comHere is some coverage from ESPN about Disco Demolition. I 'borrowed' it from YT user: http://www.youtube.com/KYF2001Disco STILL SUCKS!Steve Dahl ...

What specifically is wrong with hip hop?
Also hip hop today is wildly different than hip hop of the 80s. I don't like much hip hop today, but the 90s had some great rap.
