Slow, older, less experienced runner here. Starting with a 15”/100m, my pace for increasing distances is far from well aligned. Since January, I’ve only been running twice a week of low-HR base mileage of just 12-16 mpw because I’ve become very injury risk averse. I very recently tried 800m repeats and the pace tables say that’s a 23’ 5K, but I’d conservatively say under 25’ as I actually did cover 5K in 25’ including walk portions.
I’d like to continue running just twice a week and 15-20 mpw, not more, until I have more injury resistance confidence. Is 800m repeats twice a week the most efficient way to improve aerobic capacity and 5K time down to 20’? Or is 800 repeats once a week and the rest easy mileage better? Or something else?
I’m also concurrently doing weight training 4 days a week and other cardio like indoor cycling or rowing.
