Notice how it was off a double and probably is a poor guess of his max fitness. He ran like 825 the following year. His fitness didn't change that much.
He might have been a better 800m guy but it is hard to argue about picking the mile when you shattered the WR. He could have been a great 5k guy also but again why do that when your the best miler the world has ever seen...
The mile was a lot more prestigious. So it would make sense for Ryan to focus on the mile rather than the 800, even if maybe he could have been better at the 800.
Ridiculous thread of course. It’s reasonable to believe Ryun would have run 1:44 and 3:50-51 as a HS SR, and 1:42/3:29 before turning 21. Where he would really have benefited from modernity is in the health and longevity of his career. And if his 1972 fall had occurred in Tokyo ‘21, he would almost definitely have been admitted to the final.

Too many runners have fallen/gone down in races on purpose due to nerves for me to believe falling is pure bad luck. If not bad luck, lack of coordination.
Ryun had 1:41.xx 800m talent if he would have focused on the event (today's shoes & tracks). Ryun & Snell, two men who were physically too large in stature to be elite 1500m runners, would not have responded to the shoes and track surfaces as well as some of you believe at 1500m. Skin color is not a 0% factor in U.S. for which events one is guided. Peak Jim Ryun and peak Duane Solomon, both 6'2" or 6'3 170 pound men.
Ventolin, R.I.P. made a lot of statements on here about Ryun's abilities. I disagree with much Ventolin stated, but Ventolin and I both agreed, Ryun was a likely 46 flat 400m guy. Late 1960s/early 1970s, a 46-flat 400m 6'2"/6'3" 170 pound man had no business racing 1500m.

Correct. Ryun had no business racing the 1500m. What the hell was he thinking? This man was setting world records in the 1500m and mile but you were not around to tell him that he had no business even contesting those events. If only we could go back in time and place you there.

World records. So what. Did you see Ryun in Olympics, 1500m? Ryun gave away two 800m gold medals in order to please (most likely) men like you. Ryun chased 1500m gold for men like you.

Jim Ryun gave away two 800m gold medals in order to please men like me? You seriously need psychiatric treatment. You are not well.

You have nothing intelligent to say so you go to personal attacks. If you are going to be the next Ventolin, at least back your Ryun 1500m love with math.

I don’t really care much about this subject. It is easy to say Ryun should have contested the 800m but have you ever thought that the reason he did not win gold was not due to being in the wrong event? Simple minds make the sort of mistake you are making. Seb Coe was arguably better at 800m than 1500m BUT he won two gold medals at 1500m. Now with Jim Ryun we will never know but you sound a bit unhinged when you say Ryun was trying to please men like me. I don’t care what event Ryun contested in the Olympics and I certainly wasn’t around to be pleased by it. You simply show little evidence for your assertions other than some notion that those you deem to be relatively large men with 400m speed cannot excel at 1500m. That is the extent of your argument.
As absurd a post as was ever on here. Ryun was the WR Holder at both 15 and the mile, that post is so historically incorrect and stupid, you should be banned ...lol. He caught bad venue at Mexico City at enormous Altitude, to a completely altitude adjusted athlete in Keino And ran 3:37.8 at 7200feet a time today people would have adjusted for the NCAA down to like 3:32? I think he lost twice to Keino. and had a 3 year win streak of 47 races at one point. Fell in Munich and was out of the game by 27-28? Ryun probably should have explored the 800M further, but he certainly had "business" running 1500M/Mile, to say otherwise in uninformed and historically and data point challenged.
