Hello letsrun,
I'm an ex d1 athlete who recently signed up to be the track coach for some 4th and 5th graders. They asked at the local elementary school if anyone could coach the team and I signed up as my son wants to do it.
Has anyone done this before? Do you have any pointers and/or fun oriented workouts for kids in 4th and 5th grade? To be honest, my aim is not to win but to actually develop people who will exercise as adults and also give the kids a chance to see what they might be good at it. And of course have fun - that's #1.
As for events, we have high jump, long jump, shot put, sprints and distance (max distance 1600).
We’ll practice twice a week and the first meet is probably after 4 practices.
What has worked for you in the past? Is there a book or website that has good practice ideas?
What's the #1 mistake to avoid?
What's the #1 thing I need to make sure I do?
Many thanks,
