Putting aside all the drug accusations, I can sympathize with Rupp's back issues. I developed severe lower back pain in the Spring of 2015. It just suddenly showed up. Tried rest, pain killers, nothing worked. Got an MRI and was diagnosed with degenerative discs in my back. The cause, getting old. Doctor said I could keep running as much as I wanted to, it was just how much pain I was willing to tolerate to keep running. Abdominal and lower back exercises help manage it, but it does flare up from time to time. It will never completely go away. Luckily I have still been able to run and have managed a few decent marathons in the past few years on my now 50 year old frame. I wish him luck in his recovery and hopefully it is something he can fix or make manageable with treatment.
He may not get the AR, but what American can come close to even an 80% Rupp in the marathon? If he wants, the guy is THE FAVORITE in 2024 and likely making the team in 2028. Injuries of course are a concern but this guy ran 2:06 on a broken foot at Chicago in 2018…
You are really stupid. Like it is not even debatable how stupid you are. Galen has ZERO chance of making the 2028 Olympic team and less than a 20% chance of making the 2024 Olympic team.
Not a fan of his whatsoever but it's pretty shocking that a guy with his track prs and current technology couldn't break the American record in the marathon or the half marathon. He has had every advantage imaginable.
I have always appreciated Rupp because he is one of very few true US Pro Runners paid to compete and win. You won't see him positing his sob story on social media after a bad race like the rest of these influencers. If he is hurt, you won't hear about it from him. He was only 28-seconds from a marathon PB just 5 months ago in hot and humid conditions. Say what you will about his past suspicions, but we have not seen the last of Galen Rupp!
Galen’s biggest injury is to his ego after Grant Fisher took away his US 10000m record. Grant essentially rendered Galen’s career a footnote in US distance running history and sadly a scandal saturated footnote at that.
Too bad Rupp never went for a fast, flat time trial marathon in his prime. We'll never know what he could do.
At least there's Mantz starting to take over the half marathon reins. Maybe the full soon as well. We have a ton of talent in the 5000 & 10000 so definitely a lot to follow and root for there.
Mantz will never come anywhere near Rupps career. So many like Fisher, Teare, Hocker, etc. with better potential.
Teare and Hocker are 1500/mile monsters with great 3000/5000 ability. Don't see them going up to even the 10. Fisher is a 5/10 force. Don't think even the half marathon is on his radar. Any incentive for that?
Mantz at least is 25. And getting better. He's the right structure/weight for ultra long distance
Rupp ran a 2:06:35 at Chicago in 2021. Conditions were in the 70's and humid. That sounds like 2:05, record-shape to me. If it were the normal 55 degrees....
