Too bad Rupp never went for a fast, flat time trial marathon in his prime. We'll never know what he could do.
Do you discount Chicago from the fast, flat time trial marathon list? 2018 had pacers, Rupp was 5th, age 30, 2-years removed from an Olympic podium, and a few months after his PB in Prague. That might be the best he could do. Someone might be able to remember the weather conditions.
Also, Prague was fast and paced, where he also ran 2:06 with supershoes. Course record there is still the 2:05:39 from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eliud_Kiptanui, set in 2010.
I'd be more inclined to believe he's "clean" if his career tailed off in his mid to late 30s. Guys shouldn't be setting PRs past age 35 unless there's a reason such as super shoes or something.
This is a weird rule. At 35 your body just shuts down? Can you show the research proving that you shouldn't set PRs at that age?
Rupp is 35, going on 36 in May. Definitely in the tailend of his career. But I think it's a little premature to say it's the end, or even the twilight. He could definitely still have a couple more good marathons in him, and 2:05 doesn't seem completely out of the question.
Kinda depends how his struggles with injury go; I can't remember who exactly but I feel like at least one of Kimetto, E. Mutai, and G. Mutai was ultimately done in by some back issues. But if he can get that under control, I still think he can go strong for another couple years. Eliud is only a year and a half or so older than Rupp, and he seems to be doing ok after one hiccup ...

Are you two joking or are you on drugs? As if we don't know Rupp was running injured in 2018 and had surgery shortly thereafter? Come on. Prague?? Get out. That Prague race had crap pacing, no competition, and that is in no way near a fast course as Berlin or Rotterdam. Running on cobblestone is a fast one huh? What did they have, a couple of idiot pacers who went out too fast then slowed down? Ridiculous. Compare that to a real time trial circus show with 10 pacers right on the money and 20 guys at the 20 mile mark.
Honestly, he had the best preparation and support money could buy. It kept him mostly healthy for 20 years at this point. He is probably past the end of his top phase, Tokyo and the Olympic Trials 10K were likely honest tests of his abilities at 35. So much to be proud of, but the taint of being Salazar's protégé and the thyroid med TUEs may sour the memories of his career in the minds of many.
His daily medicine cabinet according to the FancyBears leak

The thing is Kipchoge is well in his prime based on results. The thing is Rupp is (barely) past his based on results. He could maybe have a falsh in the pan low 2:05/high 2:04 performance bit it seems very unlikely if not impossible at this point.
However, he is a historically good runner and a seasoned vet so maybe I'll eat my words.
After "only" finishing 8th at the 2021 oly games marathon and a recent DNF at the NYC half it seems that Rupp is at his last few years at the top if not already past them. I would have to imagine that his shot at an American record in the 'thon is out the window. I guess off the sauce he's not as good anymore, discus?
You must not be following the sport very closely if this is your take on the situation. NYC Half went exactly according to plan. Trust the Salazar process. Just wait.
I know this a troll but I'll bite. If you think Salazar will ever coach Rupp again you should rethink that. Galen is not dumb enough to give Roberto Saladbar a 2nd chance.
A real bummer if he can't compete in Eugene this summer. He was definitely looking forward to that. We all were. One of my favorite Rupp races was in December, 2015 when he easily jogged that random half marathon all by himself in 1:01 to qualify for the 2016 marathon Olympic trials.

That was a good one he was rolling up on randoms who were running their a$$ off while he was prolly going 90%ish effort. Then wins the OT marathon in his 26.2 debut.
Rupp ran a fine time in tough conditions at Chicago last year, 2:06:35, in temps that started at 72 and they faced gusty winds. So, no reason to think he's done. But right now he had to drop out of the half and probably had a calf strain or the like, so I imagine the odds are not high that he'll finish or maybe even start Boston. In the fall, he should just go for a marathon like Berlin if he's healthy. He had lower back/glute pain in training recently. Maybe that was the issue. His earlier goal was to run the marathon at World's in Eugene and then maybe a fall marathon as well.

You make a GREAT point. But a cynic would say he's no longer getting massages from Salazar.

I was in that Half! He made it look so easy to run 61:xx - "easily jogged" is spot on. Pretty sure he doubled back immediately after finishing and put in another 4-6 miles at the same tempo - light work for the GOAT.
Damn you guys are brutal anytime a pro runner has a bad day. Or two bad days. Or three. Or if they hit a plateau. People are human and the second anyone blows up, you can ALWAYS count on LetsRun to say "HE IS DONE FOR GOOD. CAREER = OVER."
