3 or 4 years at that age can be a lot of time, so be patient trying to get it back. you've been lifting so you've probably put on some weight. this could be bad or really bad. if your abs are still in the same shape as they were before, you are probably okay, if not, you'll want to dump a little extra flab.
take your time. 2 or 3 mile jogs every other day for a couple or few weeks is not going to easy, but this is going to be different for everybody. listen to your body. after a couple weeks, start throwing in some strides. As long as you are feeling good, add in another mile per day, or an extra run day each passing week.
Once you get to 20-25 miles per week, maybe start throwing in a weekly workout and/or tempo run to go along with the strides. Doesn't have to be anything crazy. In the beginning, 6x200, 4x400, 4x800 etc. can give you PLENTY of stimulus.
If you are at 25 mpw and doing sensible workouts for where you're at, and still feeling good, throw on another 5 miles per week. you can keep doing this until you hit whatever you want your peak mileage to be. You just have to keep listening to your body.
Some guys will say to work up to your max mileage before starting any workouts, and that's okay. If that is stimulating enough for you, go for it. But it's not necessary. I think workouts are fun and break up the monotony, so I like to get into them as soon as i know my body will tolerate them.
