Wow, 1:15.58. That's #10 US all-time indoors.
Is the 800m record finally going down this spring? That's an insane time for a high schooler in January.
Oh, I just checked and it's also #17 all-time indoors. Certainly not the strongest record out there, but he's the 17th fastest all-time as a high schooler.
Kid can run sub-1:45 right now.
Lol not 1;45 but probably 1:48 and then 1:46-47 outdoor. This is incredible.
IF this kid wants to be legendary, he needs to run the 1500m. He will be good at the 800m but the 1500m is where it's at. It's like how Bowerman had to break it to Prefontaine that he wasn't a miler.
I watch him run and all I see is Coe, Morceli, El Guerrouj. He has the tools to beat Cole Hocker and that means he would be a factor in any global 1500m for a long time.
The progeny of two Villanova runners: Tosha Woodward and Brad Sumner.

Care to elaborate???
Equates to 1:47.67. Awesome for high schooler, especially since Nico Young ran laughable 1:54.
I see prs of 200m 21.55 400m 47.01 and 800m 1:51.67 seems like a pretty significant leap. Excited to see what he can do
I can't believe more people aren't talking about this kid. I discovered him the weekend before when I saw that he ran the 500m record. It caught my eye that he's run 21 mid in the 200m and 1:52 for the 800m, plus 4:30 and 16:40 in his first year of XC. The only person who comes to mind with range like this at this age is Isaiah Harris, and Sumner seems on track to be even better than him. Harris didn't break 1:50 until late June his senior year. Sumner seems like he could certainly do it indoors. He split under 26 for the last 200m of this record! Running a 600m evenly like that suggests more strength and potential in the 800m IMO. He could be the next great American 800m runner, like Brazier level.
Whoever says he needs to move up to the 1500m is getting way ahead of themselves for how young he is and how much of a sprint background he has. He could probably mess around and run around 4:10 in the spring. That's great but let him gradually build strength. While I think he should keep some sprint focus and not rush to longer distances, I do think at this point he should not go to Georgia (where he is currently committed) because he's not a 200m runner anymore. He should go to A&M where they can train 400m-800m types.
Yes he does remind me of High School Brazier. Brazier also ran cross country . If he does stay in Georgia for freshman year I am sure Pat Henry will get him the next year. That is if Sumner hasn't gone pro by then. Either way he will be in a Nike uniform for the 2024 Olympic trials.
That's incredible.

interesting. on WA profiles, parents roughly:
55.6/2:00/4:14 (1500m)
1:46/3:59 (mile)
plenty of potential here. based on the parents, 800 is probably the right place in the end but the kid looks like an Isaiah Harris-type with those sprint times and there is absolutely no reason to rush him into being a "distance runner"
Wow!! He absolutely destroyed the old record. Brazier-like talent. The famed 1:46.45 from 1996 is officially on the watchlist. Rooting for this guy to have a long and successful career at 800m. Non of this 1500m talk either. He's a true half miler if there ever was one.
I was beating the drums about this kid last week after he destroyed the 500m record but no one cared. This record is even more impressive. Maybe the 500m is competed in most by New Yorkers. But here! A 2 second drop and 1:15.58 is seriously impressive for a high schooler. If those are his parents, that is impressive stock, 1:46/2:00 and 3:59 mile/4:14 1500m! What impressed me the most about the 500m video was how he took off from the field at 400m to finish the last in 12 seconds off of a 49 second opening. Here he ran solo and crushed the field with a first 49.68 400m, and this indoors. He will not be cowed by sub 50 opening 400s in the 800m outdoor when he races pros. He's also got the light build of a middle distance runner. If he really closed this sub 26, that indicates that high school 800m record is finally in real jeopardy, and watch out in the last 300m if he is in a tactical scholastic mile. 800/1500 might be his best final trajectory, but specialization in the 800m is most likely, of course.
I'm bringing this thread back in six years when this guy makes the Olympic team in the 1500m.

Or you could bring it up in 2 years, when he makes the Olympic team in the 800m.
