It may seem like ancient history to some of you but, the wholesale shut down of state mental health hospitals and replacing it with privatized care funded by private health insurance largely created the homeless problem as we know it. You cannot wipe out a whole system with a pen stroke and then simply build it back at a later date under a different administration. What many of you fail to consider is the effect that Prop 13 (Google it) has had on California budgets for over 40 years. That ties the hands of the state legislature on a great many things but, it virtually assures that no new programs or bureaucracy can be built. They can realistically only fund or grow existing programs.
Let's imagine that Biden had the power to dismantle the military. Laid off the troops, sold off the bases to corporate entities for redevelopment, got rid of all of the weapons - full on swords-to-plowshares stuff. Then, about 10 years later, China decides it wants to occupy the USA and turn it into Chinese property. How long would it take to reconstitute a standing military? What about training them and an officer corps? How long would it take to build the weapons needed to defend ourselves? What if executives from companies like Boeing, Raytheon, GM, Ford, Amazon, Microsoft, or Grumman were paid by the Chinese to refuse defense contracts and convert their assets to wartime use? Short answer - start learning Mandarin because we couldn't do it and the elites would likely fatten their bank accounts and embrace their new masters. If Beijing gave Bezos and Musk billions more and told them they could keep doing business as usual under CCP rule, how "patriotic" do you think that they would be? If doing so meant raising taxes (and it would!), would the majority of voters agree or would they ponder if life under China would really be that bad if Xi promised to keep the Trump tax cuts in place? Gutting our military would be stupid and we would never recover from such an action.
As someone stated up thread, the largest demographic of the homeless population for two generations have been the mentally ill. They often cannot function normally which then rules out employment and health insurance to get treatment from private healthcare. There are no more state mental hospitals or meaningful publicly funded treatment options. What is the alternative LRC conservatives? Let them fester on the streets? Round them up and cull the herd? Prisons? Or just keep complaining about the problem while hoping that they never get near your rural enclaves and gated communities? You should be thankful that liberals want to do something constructive. Honestly, the cheap solution would just be to buy them plane, bus, and train tickets to warm destinations in red states and make them your issue.
"Ancient" decisions have far reaching consequences for future generations. Why do you think that the GOP is so hot to stack the federal courts with conservative judges? Because they understand that big changes have generational consequences.
