Haven't seen a discussion on this in a while. Is it still Carter's shot put? Kessler's 1500? Thoughts on Efraimson's 1500?

Carter's shot is pretty unreal. Crouser was close, but even he couldn't get it.
I'd say Rudy Chapa's 28:32 10,000 run waayyy back in 1976 . It would still be incredibly hard to beat even if the distance was run more at the high school level.
Speaking of high school records.....
It was 1928 in Selma California at the state high school track & field championships. The event the 100 yard dash. Frank Lombardi false starts, so he has to move back a yard, yep the rules back then, must have pissed him off because at the gun he simply ran way from everyone*** What was his time....9.6 which tied the world record, not the just the high school record, the world record. So who can tell me the last time a high school kid ran a world frecord? Yep, it has happened since then.
*** in the field was Frank Wykoff who would end up running the first 9,4 in history, also a three time Olympian.
After 1928 we never heard of Frank Lombardi again, yep....poof!!!!

Agreed, 28:32 in high school is unreal. I just noticed the top 3 high school 10k times were all run in 1976 (28:55 Eric Hulst and 29:06 Bill McChesney, who was apparently a junior), do you know if they were all run in the same race?

No clue (and this was also many years before I was born!)
https://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=8853340I did find this thread while I was searching that the time was indeed 28:32. Looks like he ran it at the Drake relays so it is possible that other top highschoolers would have been running there too.

Ah, no worries. I was about to write out a long-winded thing about how Eric Hulst probably also ran there since it was in California, but I found the results for the race as I was writing it and he wasn't. Results:
https://static.godrakebulldogs.com/custompages/Relays/Results/1970's%20Results/1976%20Drake%20Relays%20Results%20UC-Marathon001.pdfThe 10k is at the bottom half of the page, Saturday morning.
Awhile back, i did an analysis of hs records based on dec scoring tables, comparisons of various lengths records stood etc... Carter by far.
19.84. End of discussion.
Jeff Nelson indoor two mile run record since he did it wearing a Rollin Stones sticky fingers shirt. The one with the mouth open and tongue sticking out.
19late70s
No not really, there is a HS record that is also the world record.
I was at Drake, that day in 1976, when Chapa ran his 10,000.
I just thought I'd add that the race was run in a steady, chilly rain...

I agree.
But in another thread it was written that nothing before 2000 would be taken into consideration.
So for the young that record doesn’t exist. It’s to old. Hahaa
Pole vault and it’s not even remotely close. Whether you consider it 5.93 or 6.05 it doesn’t matter.
If the latter, it is even better than other “high school” marks like jakobs 3:30 and baregas 12:43 per iaaf scoring tables.

I now agree with this one

Yes wore that shirt. No record. He ran 8:42.7. Lindgren record was 8:40 at that time.

Scroll to the bottom and see the photo of Nelson wearing the shirt.
