Everybody says that it won't happen. For me, it did. My legs got quite a bit bigger after several months of lifting heavy. I wasn't doing much. Two sessions a week. A typical routine would have some miniband exercises to warm-up, a balance exercise or two, a few warm-up sets then three exercises and three sets of five. For example, a typical day could be 3x5 Squats, 3x5 Lunges, 3x5 RDL. Although I have seen significant gains in strength, I have had some more little injuries and haven't seen it translate to faster running. Conventional wisdom these days says to lift heavy and low reps.
I am considering either cutting it to two exercises and focusing on more posterior chain exercises (RDL, single leg RDL, hex bar dead lift) or eliminating weights completely and doing something like Vern Gambetta's leg circuit progression for a few months.
