Short dynamic warmups pre-run. Some compound movements couple times a week in the weight room.

"Pounding" means running with bad form. Form breaks down due to fatigue. Solution: stop, take a break, drink some water, let your legs recover, and then run some more. There are also other effective approaches, but the basic problem is fatigue.
Getting and staying light is one of the best ways to reduce the impact on your legs when running, as long as you do it in a healthy way, of course.
I always feel better taking a few days on a treadmill.

Quit pounding.
plated super shoes help with that
they help with forward progression (minimize muscular effort/push so you don't tire out)
and redirect stance impact forces (direct ground impact forces towards controlled eccentric muscle activity rather than stressing joints and ligs)
grass is nice, but the track is even better because the bouncy surface provides energy return
treadmill can be good, especially if a decline function is available. doing some mileage at -3 to -5% with some nice super shoes can be great for some recovery minded training
Good shoes
Train on a variety of courses - hills one day, flat on another day
Train at different paces to work different muscles/systems
Take days off/cross train as needed
