anyone else feeling bottomed out? training has been awful recently, just can’t seem to feel good even on the easiest of days. hoping it’s just weather mixed with seasonal woes, but very nervous for upcoming indoor season.

Well, it was 60 degrees and humid here in the Mid-Atlantic today. Made me have a case of that Christmas delicacy Schweddy Balls.

I agree. The conditions are pretty tough by me (black ice everywhere, freezing winds), and my track is covered in 2 feet of snow. it’s disheartening to not be able to train as fast or hard as I otherwise would be able to. I just find comfort in knowing that sticking it out through these crappy conditions and this dreary time of year will pay off during my season, and that every time I lace up my shoes and open my door to -5 degree temperatures makes me tougher. If you really want to excel, then you have to stick it out. How bad do you really want your goals?

Of course, today there is 6 to 12 inches of snow in the southern portions of the Mid-Atlantic.
I think it's just hard to count on consistent fast outdoor training during winter. Opportunistic speedwork when the conditions permit, but sticking to a set training schedule can be tough. Can't do much when the roads are icy and the track is covered in snow. The anomalously warm and snow-free start to winter made me almost forget about the true adversity that winter brings. If you have access to indoor facilities, you can bang out some speedwork if you're willing to tolerate the monotony.

And I gotta add that consistency/mileage is the number one building block to focus on. It's the base of the pyramid, and I can't remember feeling good in my training without those two prerequisites. So don't wait to feel good to start training consistently - flip it around and train consistently and have faith you will start feeling better if you stick with it.
