When I look at college Xc rosters and search their freshman’s times in milesplit I find that at many d1 universities some of the guys haven’t broken 16 yet and some are barely under 4:30 in the mile can anyone explain this?

16:00 and 4:2x makes the cut at a decent amount of smaller and mid major D1 schools.
I went through every B10 roster and only found that at two.
Cross country times are pretty irrelevant, I technically never broke 16:00 in high school but I was 15:00 for 3 miles and All-Region at my NXN Regional race. I also had a college teammate that ran 4:31 in high school but ran 24:30 for 8k as a freshman and ended up going under 14:00 and 29:00 in college. Some people just aren't good in the mile. Many of these guys you're looking up may have some weak PRs but they all have some performance, whether a championship race or specific event, that got them on the team.
