Non-refundable flights and hotels are cheaper than refundable flights and hotels. So why would you pay more for something that, at that time, was extremely unlikely to be cancelled?
First off, when travelling for an event, you should never book any kind of non refundable travel. The lowest refundable cost is the true cost of the travel. If you don't book that, you're a sucker.
Lastly, the meet hasn't been cancelled yet. You could still get lucky, in which case you probably saved enough for a steak dinner after the race. Enjoy fretting over the uncertainty of will they won't they for the next few weeks. I'd look for a backup meet with in driving distance, but with half a million americans testing positive a day by late jan, those may get cancelled too.
