Sorry for his family.
I met Matt a few times and he was very nice.
RIP
Here's a link to an entertaining story from the meet director of a large Illinois HS invitational in 2001. The coach of unknown junior Matt Scherer submitted a sub-50 seed time that was obviously "fake" to the experts, but the meet director puts Scherer in the fast heat anyway to teach him a lesson. The winner ran 46.7 and you can guess who it was.

LRC note. Here is a video of Matt's 46.7
Condolences to family and friends. Without a doubt the best pace maker I have seen. May RIP. He will be missed ;(

Here is another good link on Scherer.

PS. That story about him being unknown was great but if you watch the video it says he'd already run 47.7 that year - so the guy seeding them didn't know who he was but the announcer did.

For myself it has been a difficult few weeks struggling with a number of things (work and personal) and yesterday was one of the rare good days and then this news hit me.
Such a nice guy
Don't let the sad news bring you down too far, brother. We're only here for so long naturally, so have the best time you can. It really isn't worth getting too upset about just about almost everything.
Sucks. RIP and condolences to those who knew him.
I appreciated the times I saw him rabbit—he and Bram Som I always found really impressive.
Sucks.

RIP Matt.
At a social gathering one time with a plethora of talent in the room, someone asked to be introduced to Matt. Lad quirps, "why do you want to be introduced to Matt, he is just a pacer?", to which Robby Andrews replies, "true, BUT he's the World's best pacer."

RIP to a legend
Go to the World Athletics web site at
https://worldathletics.org/athletes/united-states/matthew-scherer-14250593and scroll down to the Results button. You can see each year. Look around 2012 plus or minus to see how many races he paced. I believe that they were all 800s.
Legit PRs from 100 meters up through the 800.
What is the record for best 100m + 200m + 400m + 800m PRs? I cannot imagine there are many people faster than Scherer. There are probably a lot of people who could have done it faster but I do not know of any others who recorded all the necessary times in competition.
Thanks for sharing that blog post & video.
Track nation lost a good one.
Kindest dude. Too soon.
May his family find peace. RIP Matt.

RIP. Very sad
Condolences.
I think being open about cause of death in any case can help potentially help prevent something similar to happen to others. Whether it’s to encourage younger runners to get tested for health related problems that they think don’t apply to them because “they are so healthy from all the running” or if it’s suicide, encouraging more people to act when they see signs and don’t ignore them. We are taught history in school to not make the same mistakes in the future, the same goes for this. We can learn from eachother.
