For myself it has been a difficult few weeks struggling with a number of things (work and personal) and yesterday was one of the rare good days and then this news hit me.
Such a nice guy

RIP. I have to admit when I see someone young dying suddenly with no mention of cause I assume suicide or OD. May not be right but it is what it is
For those that really want to know in most states death certificates are public record. Give it some time and then go take a look it you really want to know.

RIP. By all accounts Matt was a great person; seeing one aspect of him in his pacing was a gift. His pacing track record - there is a spreadsheet floating around that he himself may have prepared, and that documents all of his pacing efforts and shows his incredible ability to run right on the targeted splits - is without compare.
Here's that info from his personal website. I think it has most everything except his final spring & summer (2014). I might update it if/when I have the time to find all of the races/splits.
https://schererspeed.runnerspace.com/gprofile.php?do=title&title_id=114&mgroup_id=137He will be missed by all who knew him. Please, out of respect for his family, keep the speculation to yourselves.
At the very least a thread such as this one should have a notification that the content relates to a possible suicide and should have a link to resources at the top of every page such as:
US National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (800-273-8255)
Or
SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resourcesWay too young very sad RIP I was an athlete during his time period. Great competitor man was a beast.

How is 38 young?
How is it not? There are horses at barns my kid has gone too that are older. 38 is young.
RIP
Condolences to those on here who knew him.
RIP and heartbreaking. That was a long stretch where he was trusted to lead the great races. As a "big" runner I always thought of him as an inspiration.
Agree with Flagpole and malmo
It's disrespectful to speculate on someone's death on public forums, especially this day and age where things get repeated enough it some how becomes fact and could be added to someone's legacy. Enough whispers and it is then a fact even though its just stupid speculation.
If it was suicide then let the family and close ones grieve on their own terms
If it wasn't suicide let the family grieve on its own without having to deal with such awful gossip that would make it even harder in their loss.
Mods do your job please and RIP to such a well loved and respected man.

The cause of death has not been released. Of course when anyone dies young suicide is a possibility and we should post links to such hotlines.
When people have made threats of suicide on LetsRun in the past mental health professionals have told us to leave up the the post and put links to hotlines.
This thread is intended to pay respects to Matt.
The thread got sidetracked with people discussing whether the cause of death should be announced in death announcements. That is not the point of this thread and posts debating this will be deleted as will posts speculating on the cause of death.
If you have questions feel free to email me wejo@letsrun.com

Nice interview of him discussing pacing duties in 2013:

There's also a Letsrun interview from 2014(?):
Yes, thank you. I did not intend my post to suggest in any way the cause of death or disrespect Matt or his family. He was clearly a wonderful, well loved and respected person based on what I’ve read. I was just concerned that if the thread veered unceasingly into the sad topic of self harm the requisite warnings and links should be provided for any vulnerable people reading the thread, be they posting or not.

Go to the World Athletics web site at
https://worldathletics.org/athletes/united-states/matthew-scherer-14250593and scroll down to the Results button. You can see each year. Look around 2012 plus or minus to see how many races he paced. I believe that they were all 800s.
That one stings. He was so good at letting folks gently latch on and then almost imperceptibly accelerating up to pace.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
