every dope here complaining about the criticism of the CIM course has...surprise, surprise...PRed on that course. No wonder they defend it The comparisons to Boston are ridiculous as you are only focusing on the "net" down hill...not how you arrive at the net.
The CIM has a rep in the running community, stop denying it. People use to go there to chase a PR for a reason.
I missed out on a BQ few Octobers ago at the Long Beach Marathon. I Guess I BQd, but rather missed the cut off by 16 seconds. I was about to sign up for CIM the following December to get it, but thought if I was going to BQ, I'd want to do it on a course that I would personally feel content with myself qualifying on- so I signed up for the LA Marathon that March- a course with about 4% BQs per year, got it and ran Boston. I remember that weekend chatting with people on the bus ride over, or just people in town, everyone asking each other what course did you qualify on etc, and TBH I felt good qualifying a course that not ridiculously hard, also not a course one would seek out to BQ. The thing is with Revels and CIM, Mtn to the Beach , they are legit courses as far as BQ standards, so if people choose to get theirs on them, or count their PRs on them - that's up to them,
CIM is fast, there's no doubt about that. It likely receives the treatment it gets because of how consistently well people run there, and I believe the weather has more to do with that than anything. I started following CIM results in 2016 and the conditions have been close to ideal almost every single year. You don't see that at races like Chicago and Boston where the weather is more of a crapshoot, so those are deemed more "fair".
Everyone is different but I've found that the rolling hills of CIM to be much more difficult than running on a flat course. I finished Berlin thinking it was much easier on the legs than CIM.
