No it doesn't explain anything. First, who is to say that the course Ritz ran was every meter of a 5K? Is not possible that course was not exactly the full distance. There is no independent, repeated measures that would demonstrate this.
Ritz ran his time on racetrack speedway. There's no way this is superior to Reina's record (still) on the San Diego 5k championship course, that requires climbing a sizable hill on the loop and rolling terrain.
Please let's stop the mythologizing of Ritz. Heads-up in the same race LV nd Reina would likely have beaten him on a tough course.
