A 2:20 runner has no chance of making the olympics. Hell, a 2:15 runner probably has no chance of making the olympics. It’s like having 1:55 800m guys, 3:55 1500m guys etc running at the Olympic trials. Yeah they are impressive times to run but there’s no way you’ll go to the olympics.
No one has ever given me a good explanation as to how having extra runners in the back of the pack at the Olympic trials makes the quality of the top runners any worse
So should we start setting the Olympic trials standards for other events at relatively uncompetitive times?
A heat full of guys running 14:30-15:00 for 5k at the Olympic trials isn’t going to hurt the fast heat of guys targeting 13:00-13:30, so no reason not to right?
Why don’t we run a few heats of 10.7-10.9 guys for kicks and giggles in the 100m?
I know it sounds rude and UnInCluSiVe to keep people out of the trials, but the trials should be trials. If you are nowhere near having the ability to make the team you shouldn’t be at the trials IMO.
Your argument implying that people need to explain how slower runners impede the faster runners in order to validate cutting down qualifying times is a fallacy. Slower runners dont need to impede the faster runners to warrant not having them in the race. With your logic, anyone should be able to sign up for the marathon trials and give it a go.
